Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will participate in the development of novel laser technologies for remote and laboratory-based detection of elements and isotopes. Specifically, this position involves research on laser beam delivery by leveraging recent advances in optics and non-linear phenomena. Research will focus on testing of optical vortex beams, adaptive optics, and femtosecond laser filamentation phenomena for long range laser beam propagation, and coupling them with different optical spectroscopy modalities. This project aims to advance current capabilities for remote laser beam propagation in the context of developing the next-generation of remote sensing technologies.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct advanced experimental research on beam shaping with pulsed and continuous wave lasers.
  • Work on vortex beams, adaptive optics and/or femtosecond laser filamentation processes.
  • Design optical systems and related diagnostics.
  • Spatial and temporal characterization of laser pulses.
  • Function independently and provide research support and assistance to other members of the group.
  • Prepare and conduct technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Report research results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Carry out collaborative research with staff scientists, postdoc fellows, visiting researchers, and students.
  • Adhere with ETA and EH&S safety guidelines and requirements.

What is Required:

  • Due to funding, candidate must be able to start June 1, 2022 or earlier.
  • Recent Ph.D. in experimental Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or other related fields.
  • Extensive experience with advanced optics for beam spatial manipulation (vortex, adaptive optics).
  • Prior experience with ultrafast laser systems and related diagnostics.
  • Experience in advanced optical system design and spectroscopy experimentation.
  • Ability to work as an independent researcher and as a member of a diverse research team, collaborating toward goals, solving problems, and developing scientific ideas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to author technical and/or scientific writing and present work in conference and review meetings.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a collaborative and diverse research environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with ultrafast laser filaments.
  • Prior experience with optics modeling.
  • Experience in optical spectroscopy (e.g., LIBS, fluorescence, absorption, etc.)
  • Experience with basic surface morphology characterization technologies (SEM, optical microscopy, white-light interferometry).

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
