Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar.

The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in DOE mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. You will play an active role in the CCSE effort in optimization research, specifically the development of algorithms for computationally expensive black-box optimization problems.

This position is a research position in applied mathematics and computational science. The incumbent in this position will develop computational optimization algorithms for solving large-scale computationally expensive black-box optimization problems. The incumbent will implement, benchmark, and apply the developments to science problems relevant to Berkeley Lab and the Department of Energy, in particular event generator tunes. For more information about the optimization effort in the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering, please visit https://optimization.lbl.gov/.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will:

  • Perform basic research on numerical optimization of large-scale computationally expensive black-box problems.

  • Interact with researchers external to CCSE to explore and extend the applicability of the developed algorithms.

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team environment including mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists.

  • Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to research proposals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or Computational Science within the last 3 years, with a strong research background in optimization.

  • Demonstrated research experience in the development of computational optimization algorithms.

  • Broad knowledge of statistics and sensitivity analysis.

  • Programming experience.

  • Demonstrated interest and the ability to work as part of a cross-disciplinary team.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++ is a positive.

  • Experience/Interest in physics/event generators.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Work Schedule: Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
