Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Senior Electrical Maintenance Engineer to join the team.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the electrical maintenance program for LBNL’s Power Distribution System. The incumbent should possess technical engineering expertise, problem solving abilities and value a diverse collaborative work environment.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Manage the development and execution of a comprehensive electrical system maintenance program that complies with NFPA 70E, NFPA 70B, and NETA standards.

  • Conduct risk assessments of electrical systems and equipment to identify potential hazards and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.

  • Oversee electrical testing and diagnostics on a wide range of equipment, including switchgear, transformers, motors, generators, and protective relays.

  • Investigate and identify root causes of electrical issues and implement effective solutions to quickly resolve electrical equipment failures or malfunctions.

  • Prioritize and champion a culture of safety in all electrical maintenance activities, emphasizing the importance of safe work practice, and ensure that all electrical work is performed in accordance with safety standards and regulations.

  • Proactively seek opportunities for process improvement and optimization within the electrical maintenance program.

  • Prepare and deliver presentations to stakeholders and Laboratory Leadership on all aspects of the electrical maintenance.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends in electrical safety and maintenance, ensuring full compliance in all maintenance activities.

  • Collaborate with other departments, such as Facilities Operations and Maintenance, to ensure that electrical equipment maintenance is properly coordinated with other scheduled maintenance activities.

  • Initiate, negotiate, and manage contracts with vendors, contractors, and service providers for electrical maintenance and repair work.

  • Provide engineering management, including developing scopes of work, setting project objectives, creating timelines, defining deliverables, and ensuring that work is done in accordance with the U.S. Department of Energy standards and LBNL requirements.

  • Oversee the work of maintenance and testing contractors and in-house qualified electrical workers (QEWs), and provide direction to identify problems and coordinate the appropriate resources to quickly resolve technical issues.

  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation related to electrical equipment, including maintenance records, testing reports, and safety procedures.

  • Collaborate with other engineers to analyze data to identify impending failures.

 

What is Required:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of related experience and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering OR three (3) years with a Master’s degree, OR a Ph.D. degree OR an equivalent combination of 9 years of education and related experience.

  • Experience in leading and executing electrical maintenance programs for electrical power systems, from high and medium voltage distribution equipment down to premise wiring and utilization equipment.

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams with complex schedules and work scopes.

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable national electrical codes and standards, including NFPA 70, 70E, 70B and NETA MTS.

  • Strong ability to identify and coordinate the appropriate resources, assign tasks and responsibilities to team members, and provide clear instructions and guidance to quickly resolve technical issues and drive successful outcomes.

  • Adeptness at adjusting strategies and approaches as circumstances change, and a willingness to embrace new technologies and methodologies.

  • Demonstrated strong ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including short circuit, arc flash, and protection coordination analysis, insulation coordination analysis, electrical diagrams, drawings, and specifications.

  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and writing, including facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to convey technical information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to technical and non-technical staff  on all aspects of electrical equipment maintenance.

  • Proficiency using Bluebeam Revu in a collaborative document review process, and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data management software, including Smartsheet and Google Sheets.

 

Additional Requirements for Level 4:

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of related experience and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or six (6) years with a Master’s degree, or three (3) years with a PhD. degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams with complex schedules and work scopes.

  • California Professional Engineering Registration – Electrical.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • The Senior Electrical Maintenance Engineer 3 is expected to pay $127,212 - $155,484 annually ($10,601 - $12,957 monthly), which fits within the full salary range of $113,088 - $190,800 annually ($9,424 - $15,900 monthly) for the job classification of G31.3.

  • The Senior Electrical Maintenance Engineer 4 is expected to pay $152,676 - $186,624 annually ($12,723 - $15,552 monthly), which fits within the full salary range of $135,732 - $229,032 annually ($11,311 - $19,086 monthly) for the job classification of G31.4.

  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.
