ESnet at Berkeley Lab is seeking multiple Software Engineers with various levels of experience.

The Software Engineer:


  • Independently designs and implements small coding projects, including internal and external documentation

  • Maintains production quality software for a variety services to support science network and computing requirements

  • Works in collaboration with other software engineers to add new features to existing products may suggest better/alternative approaches

  • Participates on project teams to successfully complete project scopes, on time and within project budgets.

  • May be independently responsible for small projects.  May architect software infrastructure and service solutions and may lead and participate in architecture initiatives and takes a leadership role on project teams, and may develop and manage project scopes, planning, and schedules for software projects of varying size, scope and complexity.

  • Recommends and may lead implementation and deployment efforts for software improvements that enhance reliability, stability, usability, performance and security.

  • Provides technical mentoring for early career software team members

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum of four years of software engineering experience

  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and testing production ready software – preferably using Python, Javascript, or Java in a UNIX/Linux environment.

  • Can write software from specification with little or no help with a solid grasp of Computer Science fundamentals, including algorithms and data structures

  • Demonstrated strong analysis and troubleshooting skills

  • Other technical skills include familiarity with web technologies including using REST APIs; experience with source control tools, ideally Git and Github; familiarity with Internet networking

  • Excellent organizational, communications, and documentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently, work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.

  • Project management experience, specifically in developing technical project scope, schedule and budget. Familiarity with Agile software development practices and familiarity with Agile, DevOps, SRE principles and processes

Additional Desired Experience:


  • Demonstrated experience architecting, designing, and developing large projects, as well as experience devising software service and support processes, including implementation and ongoing support of programs.  Use of high level analysis, creativity and initiative, with ability to design and develop complex solutions consistent with user requirements and established in consultation with designated technical experts.

  • Experience in establishing and leading initiatives to develop software architectures and service strategies in coordination with budget planning efforts.

  • Demonstrated experience with automation tools and frameworks.  In-depth knowledge of Internet networking and protocols. Demonstrated experience with network measurement such as SNMP and Netflow.  Demonstrated experience with network security.  Demonstrated experience with secure coding practices

  • Demonstrated experience with statistics and statistical modelling.  Demonstrated experience with time series data collection and analysis

  • Experience with one or more of  Scala, Typescript, Google Cloud Platform (especially Google Dataflow/Apache Beam), React.js, d3.js, node.js, PostgreSQL, Django, Redis, Go, Rust, C/C++

 

Notes:


  • This is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

  • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities. Travel may be required to present project status and data to various committees and organizations.  (Multiple appointments)

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
