Berkeley Lab’s Information Technology Division has an opening for a Telecom Network and Data Communications Technician responsible for supporting the network, telephone, and other telecommunications infrastructure of the Lab. In this role, you will install, maintain, and troubleshoot structured cabling infrastructure in and between buildings, provide daily support of moves, adds, changes and deletes related to telephony and network services. This role will also manage telecommunications spaces throughout the Lab campus including power distribution and monitoring, equipment racks, environmental monitoring, and cable management. 


This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. 


What You Will Do:

  • Install fiber and copper communications cable used inside buildings from the building backbone to individual station drops.

  • Install and terminate fiber and copper outside plant communications cable used between buildings.

  • Troubleshoot problems related to telephone devices and circuits.

  • Diagnose and repair indoor and outdoor plant cable and splices.

  • Construct, test and document fiber circuits.

  • On a daily basis, complete Move / Add / Change requests for telephone and network devices installed on inside building communications wiring.

  • Work with other individuals during cable installations ensuring that all parties assisting with the installation are working safely, efficiently, and effectively.


In addition to the above, the level II will:


  • Work at a higher level of independence when carrying out assignments.

  • Troubleshoot and solve moderately complex problems.


What is Required:

  • Combination of 0 to 2 years of relevant technical experience and/or education.

  • Demonstrated experience working under general supervision using established guidelines and standard operating procedures to handle moderately complex orders and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.

  • Must be available for occasional overtime work that may be scheduled for evenings, early mornings, weekends, or holidays.


In addition to the above, Required Qualifications (Level II):


  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in the field of telephone, networking cable, and circuit installation.

  • Demonstrated experience in several of the following areas:

    • Telecommunications plant and building wiring methods and practices

    • Inside building cable route planning

    • Categories 5 and 6 and TIA568B/C wiring installation standards and practices

    • Fiber optic cable installation and termination

    • Telephone and network circuit installation and testing using specialized test equipment

    • Firestop procedures and methods

    • Telephone closet backboard layout design and construction

    • BIX, M66 and AT&T punch down blocks; diagnosis, troubleshoot and repair of problems related to telephone sets and data devices

    • PBX telephone sets and data devices

    • Twisted pair Ethernet circuits

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of this position including field activity involving:

    • Lift and pull objects up to 50 lbs.

    • Stooping, bending and crawling in confined areas, climbing ladders and stairs.

    • Working in noisy, dusty, dirty and slippery areas where hardhats are required. 


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with T1 and OPX communications lines.

  • Ability to independently test or extend lines to buildings from the main demarcation point.

  • Ability to independently diagnose and test problems related to underground wiring or splices and recommend areas of concern that may require immediate attention for repair.

  • Experience with network troubleshooting including one or more of DHCP, Voice VLAN, VoIP, and WiFi.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 7-month term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. Occasional overtime work that may be scheduled for evenings, early mornings, weekends, or holidays.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
