Berkeley Lab’s Scientific Networking Division has an opening for an experienced computing infrastructure Systems Manager.

Are you an exceptional computing systems technical leader? Do you like working on truly innovative computing and infrastructure solutions? Are you passionate about the advancement of science and technology? Do you dream of leading a highly technical team of computing systems professionals?

If so, consider joining Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). ESnet is a scientific network that interconnects the DOE national laboratory system, is widely-regarded as a global innovator in network architectures, tools, and applications, and is currently the fastest scientific network in the world.  ESnet provides high-performance network services linking scientists at national laboratories, universities and other research institutions, enabling them to collaborate on some of the world's most important scientific challenges including energy, climate science, and the origins of the universe. Funded by the DOE Office of Science, and managed and operated by the ESnet team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet provides scientists with network access to unique DOE research facilities and computing resources.ESnet is widely-regarded as a technical pioneer, is a dynamic organization of highly-motivated engineers focused on results. We envision and work towards a world in which scientific progress is completely unconstrained by the physical location of instruments, people, computational resources, or data. If you share that vision, ESnet is the right place for you.

The computing infrastructure and systems Manager is responsible for the architecture, standards, design, implementation, availability and reliability of computing infrastructure, core productivity services, and infrastructure systems supporting ESnet. Other responsibilities include the supervision and leadership of a group of 7-10 system administration professionals responsible for the implementation, maintenance and operations of a range of information technology systems; tracking emerging technologies; researching new products; and planning for future systems.

  • Direct activities and supervise the work of the group. Manage resources and budgets for ongoing operations.

  • Understand current and future requirements of the diverse ESnet customer base, independently articulating technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  Research, evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies to meet evolving needs. Align all services with customer needs, using robust, scalable, cost effective and innovative approaches.

  • Develop and maintain service levels and performance metrics. Coordinate with customers to ensure overall quality of service delivery.
