Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has an opening for a Deputy Department Head.

The Deputy Department Head is responsible for helping manage the groups in the Data Science and Technology Department (Scientific Data Management, Integrated Data Frameworks, Data Analytics and Visualization, and Usable Software Systems).  The Data Science and Technology Department performs innovative research that enhances data science capabilities used in scientific discovery across a broad range of scientific disciplines. Members of the Department collaborate broadly across Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory community, and with academic, government and industrial institutions internationally to enable breakthrough scientific discoveries that make essential use of high-performance computing capabilities.

This position may be open at the Staff or Senior Scientist level, depending on the successful candidate’s skills, knowledge, abilities, and the Lab’s business needs.

What You Will Do:

  • Reporting to the Data Science and Technology (DST) Department Head, the Deputy Department Head of the Data Science and Technology Department is expected to provide intellectual and technical leadership and management to several data science research groups and projects, which develop, implement and apply algorithms and data science codes to address scientific challenges and make scientific discoveries.

  • With input from stakeholders, and in collaboration with the DST Department Head, the Deputy Department Head is expected to develop short- and long-term research and development plans and propose new research directions for DOE.

  • The Deputy Department Head is also responsible for engaging and developing research partnerships with other Scientific Divisions at LBNL as well as in the external scientific community.

  • The successful candidate is expected to maintain his/her own research program in a data science area, including obtaining funding for his/her own research.

  • Participate in the development of new initiatives for DOE and the Laboratory, and in the development of funding opportunities for members of his/her Department.

  • The Deputy Department Head will maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.


At the Sr. Scientist level

  • Will be expected to demonstrate a higher level of scientific innovation and creativity.

  • Senior Scientist level will maintain a nationally and internationally recognized track record of performing independent scientific research in the above areas.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in a data science related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Nationally known individual with a distinguished record of scientific accomplishment and program management.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing computational science research and development teams.

  • Demonstrated record of success securing research funding.

  • Demonstrated record of developing partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, research laboratories, and others to carry out research and to deploy high performance computing technologies.

  • Strong management and administrative skills, creativity in decision-making and problem solving; experience in human resource management.

  • Ability to interact with all levels of management at the DOE, the University of California, and other national laboratories.

  • Excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to facilitate communications within institutions and with the research community, government agencies, and industry.

  • Experience applying data science in a science field of interest to DOE (e.g. Biology, Earth Science, or Process Engineering).

In addition to the above qualifications, consideration for Senior Scientist level include:

  • Demonstrated high level of scientific innovation and creativity including broad and in-depth technical expertise.

  • International recognition as an authority and world leader in a relevant field.

  • An established, independent, and internationally recognized record of outstanding research.

  • Appointment Type:

    • Career Appointment - This is a full time, career appointment.

    • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

  • Work Schedule:

    • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
