Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has immediate openings for Electronics Engineering Associate (Multiple Openings) to join the team. 

 

Under consultation with scientists and engineers, you will provide complex and varied technical support for the Accelerator and Beamline systems of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project. You will be responsible for providing electronic design, documentation, procurement, fabrication/installation instruction, and testing of ALS-U accelerator and beamline electronic systems.

 

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undertaking a new project (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, apply technical expertise and knowledge of basic engineering/scientific concepts and practices to provide multifunctional electronic design and coordination for implementation of experimental apparatus, equipment, systems, or facilities.
  • Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.
  • Provide project task coordination, materials procurement, systems installation coordination, and generate electronics circuits and systems documentation for ALS storage ring and beamline systems. 
  • Plan, initiate, and coordinate activities in support of the fabrication and installation of systems including selecting materials, reviewing design drawings, establishing inspection criteria for product system conformity and performance.
  • Maintain appropriate level of documentation on the accelerator and beamline electronic systems installed at the ALS based on ALS, LBNL, and industry standards.
  • Provide Computer Aided Design.
  • Coordinate, specify, and purchase hardware for ALS related jobs by exercising judgment within defined procedures and practices.
  • Contribute in the management of cost and schedule for ALS electronic projects.
  • Contribute in the specification of electrical needs and wiring methods, per National Electric Code.
  • Provide resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • Provide technical input and apply standard principles, theories, and/ or concepts in the development of new workflow methods and concepts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues for assigned accelerator and beamline systems, providing expertise and guidance to technical personnel.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • May direct the activities of nonexempt personnel.
  • Support non-ALS projects at LBNL as required.
  • Contribute to the overall improvements of the CAD systems.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • AA degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related field, with 2 years equivalent experience; knowledge equivalent to BS degree is preferred.
  • Significant technical expertise and knowledge of electronic engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with accelerator and beamline or other electronic systems, typically found in industrial controls, or other similar systems
  • Experience with CAD design techniques, design rules and specifications; AutoCad or Orcad experience.
  • Working knowledge of design methods and coordination implementation of technical projects, or operational assignments from beginning to end, using project management principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronics circuit and system design.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with scientists and engineers in defining goals and contributing to their realization.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, i.e. MS Word, Excel, Project.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety principles and practices.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Relevant technical certification desired.
  • Power Supply experience.
  • Working knowledge of various Industrial Controls Systems (e.g., PLC, SCADA, DCS).
  • Knowledge of networking hardware and protocols.
  • Chassis fabrication.

 

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

 

If hired at a level 1:

This full salary range of this position is between $6,561 to $11,076 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $7,385 to $9,025 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

If hired at a level 2:

This full salary range of this position is between $7,853 to $13,254 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8,835 to $10,799 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • M-F, monthly paid, exempt from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
