Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has an immediate opening for an Engineering Technician Supervisor to join the team.


The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers a great opportunity to contribute to a world-renowned research and development (R&D) environment, specifically the Advanced Light Source upgrade (ALS-U) project.


As an engineering technical supervisor, you will play a key role in the hands-on day-to-day responsibilities in support of the Engineering Division’s technical projects. You will regularly apply engineering, scientific and other technical concepts and practices with an emphasis on fabrication, assembly and manufacturing operations. You will be responsible for planning, scheduling, coordinating and directing the technical, facility, scientific, engineering and administrative support requirements of one or more functional areas.


This position is the best fit for a creative and resourceful individual who can independently provide technical leadership and implement solutions to a broad variety of engineering challenges. This position reports to the Engineering Technology Manager.


What You Will Do:

  • Supervise, manage, and direct activities and staff (e.g. technicians and associates) assigned to provide technical support for mechanical engineering objectives.

  • Select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure efficient operation including performance management, salary administration, employee development, promotions, and disciplinary actions.

  • Direct activities, equipment, and staff assignments to ensure technical support meets the Engineering Division’s project funding and schedule objectives.

  • Train staff on equipment and procedures; ensure technical continuity and safety training for staff and ensure adherence to LBL quality, technical, environmental and safety standards.

  • Provide mechanical/technical guidance to various levels of scientific and engineering staff on design, materials, manufacturing techniques, assembly, installation and testing.

  • Translate specific project objectives into technical work instructions and assignments for staff.

  • Provide accurate cost, staffing and schedule estimates for unchecked designs and assemblies.

  • Oversee budget, equipment and property for assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Manage projects with efficient utilization of staff, schedule and budget.

  • Administer Lab policies and procedures, all safety requirements and personnel actions of subordinates.

  • Collaborate on engineering projects across all the LBL scientific divisions

  • Oversee precision mechanical assembly and Ultra-high Vacuum (UHV) assembly.

  • Actively participate on the Mechanical Engineering Department's management team.

  • Provide oral and written reporting on project status to project and upper management stakeholders.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent work experience.

  • Significant supervisory experience in a technical environment, preferably with exempt and union-represented employees.

  • Substantial technical supervisory experience with advanced knowledge and judgment in most of the following areas: Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems including RGA’s, vacuum pumping, and bakeout techniques.

  • Significant technical experience with the installation and commissioning of precision scientific, mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum, and electrical systems

  • Significant understanding of fabrication and construction principles, materials, tools and processes.

  • Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and other engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service

  • Excellent oral and written communication and documentation skills.

  • Broad background in the mechanical engineering and assembly of complex products with emphasis on practical hands-on experience on overseeing assembly efforts

  • Cryogenic systems experience.

  • Permanent and electromagnet handling and construction experience.

  • Welding, machining, and mechanical assembly processes, and techniques.

  • 3D CAD Design and drafting, with the ability to create and interpret ANSI Y14.5 engineering drawings.

  • Project management abilities. Defined as the ability to control scope, cost and schedule.

  • Experience in metrology, inspection, quality control, and test methods related to manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct the activities of small teams of technical personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with scientists, engineers, and technical staff to define work and achieve project goals.

  • Material handling equipment and techniques.

  • OSHA rules and regulations, machine shop and research laboratory safe work practices.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
