Berkeley Lab’s Earth & Environmental Sciences Division has an opening for a EQSIM Project Scientist.

This position will support the EQSIM application development for the DOE Excascale Computing Program. The EQSIM application is being developed for regional-scale fault-to-structure simulations of earthquake processes. The EQSIM development is utilizing the San Francisco Bay Area as a representative numerical laboratory to test the code performance against ECP established program milestones and evaluate the distribution of earthquake induced damage at regional scale. This is a one-year term appointment which may be extended based on business need, continued funding and satisfactory performance of the incumbent.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct an evaluation of the earthquake response of critical infrastructure based on the utilization of synthetic ground motions generated from regional scale simulations.
  • Work successfully as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team of earth scientists and engineers to perform end-to-end earthquake simulations.
  • Prepare publications based on results and analysis of data.

What is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience and up to five years of relevant experience in structural or earthquake engineering (PhD and Postdoc experience preferred)
  • Experience utilizing earthquake ground motions generated from the SW4 geophysics program and nonlinear finite element programs in performing infrastructure risk calculations.
  • An understanding of geotechnical engineering and basic geophysics of wave propagation is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in structural engineering or earthquake engineering and knowledge and experience with the OpenSees and Nevada nonlinear finite element programs for simulating structural response.
  • Experience performing regional-scale simulations of infrastructure response including workflows that can accommodate the evaluation of thousands of site ground motion records and the response of thousands of buildings.
  • Ability to effectively execute and process the data from thousands of earthquake simulations on massively parallel computer platforms is essential.

For full consideration, please apply by July 1, 2021.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, one year, term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Berkeley Lab is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) and strives to hire individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who share these same values and commitments.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
