Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Facility Safety Specialist to support the implementation of the overall Safety Program in the Facilities Division. This position will focus on hazard identification and mitigation, work order reviews, field presence/safety inspections, incident investigation, assurance and risk management. The Safety Specialist will develop solutions to a wide range of very complex problems where analysis of various options or approaches to accomplishing work requires an in-depth evaluation of many diverse factors. The Safety Specialist will also advise the Safety Manager, division management, team members, safety partners and customers on strategies to address regulatory matters and control of construction, maintenance, and laboratory hazards to minimize liability risks at Berkeley Lab. What You Will Do:

  • Assist Facilities work planners in the identification of hazards associated with work scope and the proper mitigations for those hazards. Partner with work planners and crafts to identify safe methods to perform work.
    • Review work control documents to ensure that hazards are properly addressed and provide for the safe conduct of work.
    • Provide safety oversight of work in the field, assisting with safety issues and ensuring that Integrated Safety Management is implemented (scope is well defined, hazards are mitigated, and work is performed in accordance with work order and safety controls).
  • Partner with Facilities leadership in safety improvement efforts and provide recommendations for specific areas for improvement based on field observations and other safety-related performance data.
  • Serve as point of contact for Facilities Division Occurrence Reporting and Processing System, respond to incidents for fact-finding and documentation and lead SMART review for corrective action development.
  • Serve as the Laboratory subject matter expert for Mobile Elevated Work Platforms.
  • Facilitate the implementation of the workplace inspection process, including providing training and mentoring to managers and supervisors on performing inspections and using the electronic tool to record inspection results.
  • Provide leadership to the Building Emergency Team during evacuations and drills, and keep the team informed of any changes in procedures and policies through regular communications.
  • Manage the Division’s annual EH&S self-assessment, including participating in the development of objectives, lines of inquiry, training and leading assessment teams, writing and coordinating the approval of assessment reports. 
  • Conduct, coordinate and facilitate event, injury and incident investigations for the division in accordance with Berkeley Lab policies and procedures, and participate in Lab-wide investigations.
  • Assure day-to-day work, operations, and activities are conducted safely and within established work authorizations in accordance with PUB-3000 and specifically related chapters.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Safety, Risk Management, or a relevant discipline and 7 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing and coordinating safety in facilities, preferably in research buildings or for industry, government or university use. Ability to plan, organize and mitigate safety areas for multi-craft institutional and commercial buildings.
  • Proven leadership ability with diverse work groups. Skilled in working as part of a collaborative team with colleagues with a variety of backgrounds and work experiences.
  • Experience investigating accidents/incidents and recommending measures to eliminate or mitigate reoccurrences.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to interact with contractors/vendors, operational staff, scientific investigators, administrators, and technical staff in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong computer skills and use of applications such as MS suite, MS Project, and Google suite at a level of competence to produce presentations and reports suitable for Facilities and Laboratory management.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, prioritizing, organizing and applying time management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously, balance workload and perform effectively under fluctuating priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use sound judgment, apply conflict resolution skills and provide solutions to ensure results.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of this position including field activity involving: minor lifting (up to 25 lbs); frequent standing and walking; moving in confined spaces; climbing stairs; inspecting equipment requiring reaching with hands and arms and use of hands to handle or feel; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Occupational/Construction Health and Safety Technician (OHST/CHST) certification.
  • Familiarity and experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE).




  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
