Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division has an exciting opportunity available for a Mechanical Fabrication/Machine Shop Estimator, providing fabrication and machining expertise in support of the Central Fabrications Shops.


Under general supervision in the Central Fabrications Shops, you will coordinate the plans, estimates, and schedules for production and/or unique work utilizing staff, materials, and time effectively to meet project objectives. You will provide resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.You will explore, create, develop methods, and techniques for manufacturing various types of mechanical components and assemblies. You will use internal resources as well as outside resources to meet the needs of project budgets and timelines.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision utilizing experience and knowledge of machining, fabrication, and manufacturing processes, Plant/Facilities Engineering Associate will resolve a variety of technical problems to achieve project/customer goals as follows:

  • Coordinate detailed manufacturing cost estimates for multi-process fabrication projects.

  • Negotiate manufacturing processes, options, and final plans with customers.

  • Provide input for manufacturability to customers as appropriate.

  • Perform estimate processing and route projects to appropriate work-centers and shops.

  • Coordinate and procure materials and outside services necessary for requested fabrications, while ensuring materials and services meet specified criteria.

  • Expedite ongoing projects through the materials procurement, outside-services, and internal shop and work-center routing processes.

  • Resolve production problems to ensure timely delivery of end product.

  • Contribute to the efforts of Central Shop’s staff to ensure efficient, timely delivery of requested fabrications and services.

  • Report project developments, issues, and results back to the customer as well as to Shops management.

  • Schedule incoming work utilizing Central Fabrication’s ERP software system.

  • Perform schedule optimization with regard priority, work-center efficiency, and resource availability.


Additional Desired Responsibilities:

  • May lead the efforts of non-exempt personnel.


Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant program and extensive related professional technical experience preferred.

  • Machining knowledge, skills, and abilities including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equivalent to 5+ years, broad-ranging R&D machining experience. Extensive knowledge of a variety of materials (unique properties and uses).

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with managers, supervisors, customers, lead personnel, machinists, mechanical crafts personnel, engineering associates and technicians in order to translate designs into work assignments and provide high-level manufacturing expertise and advice.

  • Demonstrated technical skills in CAD/CAM system utilization.

  • Demonstrated technical understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standard ASME Y14.5M.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Good computer skills with demonstrated ability to efficiently use scheduling software systems (JobBoss preferred), CAD/CAM systems and basic productivity applications such as MS Excel and Word.

  • This position requires the ability to push, pull, grasp, grip, carry, climb stairs, and or ladders, and the ability to lift 25lbs.

  • Proper Personal  Protective Equipment is required and will be supplied.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical or Professional level certification in ASME Y14.5M GD&T.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
