Lawrance Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) has immediate multiple openings for Postdoctoral Fellow to join our BELLA center.

The BELLA Center and ATAP division conduct laser research and laser-driven plasma accelerator research.  Laser techniques include fiber laser experiments to develop spatiotemporal pulse combination systems, high energy fiber amplifiers, and electronic stabilization methods.  They also include Ti:sapphire lasers, some with temporal broadening to access the few-cycle regime, and their use to drive laser-plasma accelerators.

In this role, your primary research responsibility will be to perform experimental research to develop and apply high repetition rate, terawatt, ultrafast laser technology including temporal and spatial pulse combination, nonlinear broadening and compression, advanced digital control concepts, and precision control of output pulse characteristics. You will participate in laser applications work focused on driving laser-plasma acceleration.

What You Will Do:

  • Characterize different kinds of fiber amplifiers in temporal and spectral regimes, and use data to refine numerical models for system design and optimization.

  • Build and perform experiments to investigate coherent pulse combination schemes, comparing different stabilization algorithms and sensing methods.

  • Build and test optical systems to broaden and compress energetic ultrashort laser pulses using fibers and gas media to the few-cycle regime.

  • Apply generated laser pulses to laser-plasma acceleration.

  • Model and simulate nonlinear pulse dynamics using self-developed codes and commercial software.

  • Document and communicate the results of work in reports and oral presentations, including participation in meetings, reviews, conferences and publications in refereed journals.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering, in the laser or optics field.

  • Experimental experience with coherently combined ultrafast fiber laser systems, their diagnostics and controls, and/or the operation and characterization of ultrashort-pulse CPA lasers.

  • Experience in simulations or modeling of ultrafast laser phenomena.

  • Ability to work closely in a team with other scientists, postdocs, graduate students and technicians.

  • Ability to optimize experimental design, analyze data, and compare with numerical models using commercial or in-house developed software.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with laser-plasma interactions and acceleration.

  • Experience with laser beam shaping and beam stabilization.

  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles of optomechanics.

  • Experience with programming (Labview, Matlab, Python, C++, etc.) and optical design software (Zemax, etc.).

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
