Berkeley Lab’s  Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Geophysics Department!

In this role, you support a U.S. Department of Energy Exascale Computing Project (ECP) application development on regional-scale simulations of earthquake hazard and risk.  The multidisciplinary Earthquake Simulation (EQSIM) project is combining regional-scale geophysics simulations of earthquake ground motions with engineering simulations of infrastructure response to achieve an integrated simulation framework for fault-to-structure simulations.

What You Will Do:

  • Development of detailed finite element models of structures and structural/soil systems, interaction with the project team to develop seamless integration and coupling of geophysics and engineering infrastructure models.

  • Code development for coupling geophysics and structural/soil simulation models.

  • Detailed analysis and assessment of high-performance computing simulations.

  • Developing methods for comparing simulation model results with pertinent earthquake response measurements and data to critically evaluate simulation realism, will be an additional key objective.

  • Prepare and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Earthquake Engineering related discipline (soils mechanics/structural mechanics) with a strong background in numerical analysis / computer simulation.

  • Expertise and knowledge in geotechnical / soils engineering, structural dynamics, numerical methods, advanced finite element model development and earthquake engineering.

What We Desire:

  • Knowledge and experience with C++ programming and finite element code development.

  • Knowledge and expertise with Python programming.

  • Knowledge of soil mechanics and nonlinear soil constitutive models, and methodologies for simulating soil-structure-interaction.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.  You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
