Berkeley Lab’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer Division has an opening for a Principal Financial Analyst. You will work independently, the Principal Financial Analyst within the Budget Office (BO) is responsible for a wide range of complex analytical, modeling, system support and reporting functions.  This analyst will develop creative and effective ways to address a diverse range of complex problems, often with quick turnaround time. While some activities are routine, many are non-standard, requiring detailed and accurate analysis along with an innovative approach.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Monthly reporting and analysis of funding, cost, and FTE information; follow-up on funds control issues and deviations to planned spending.

  • Support development and execution of indirect rates, which may include financial modeling, projected collections, and analysis, timely identification of potential issues, recommendations regarding rate changes and related system maintenance.

  • Create effective presentations for a diverse range of audiences to aid in training, communication and/or decision support.

  • Plan, coordinate, and consolidate information from Divisions to meet requests from Lab executive management and DOE.

  • Divisional Support – Regularly provide guidance and discuss/consult/review on matters of funding, cost performance, cost allowability and standard budget policies and procedures. 

  • DOE and UCOP stakeholders – Represent the Budget Office in responding to and resolving standard funding and costing issues.

  • Various ad hoc analysis and reporting requests, support of year-end processes, backup role for other Budget Office staff as needed, support procedure documentation and policy development, system support, develop training materials and train Lab employees.

  • Active participation in departmental meetings and contributing as an effective team member to support a variety of departmental and operational initiatives.

  • Synthesizing and consolidating financial information to help inform decision making.

  • Produce various recurring periodic reports which detail cost and funding information accurately and on a timely basis. Providing timely identification of deviations from financial projections;

  • Maintaining Laboratory databases and financial systems to assure reporting consistency.

 

What Is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Economics (or an MBA in a similar field) and a minimum of 6 years of financial experience in a multidivisional organization, or equivalent experience. Analytical capability and innate curiosity are crucial to this position. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team under consultative direction from Manager.

  • Broad knowledge of accounting and budgeting principles including GAAP and the ability to apply theories and concepts to computer spreadsheets and report generation applications.

  • Significant experience with Microsoft applications and substantial knowledge and use of Excel, spreadsheets and financial databases.

  • Ability to independently perform complex financial analysis in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Exercise judgment in problem resolution.

  • Experience in creating effective reports, recommendations, and presentations, including the ability to produce executive summaries.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, and interact with a broad range of customers at different levels.

  • Possess organizational skills and the ability to multitask.



Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • MBA or MBA candidate. 

  • Working knowledge of Peoplesoft financial applications a plus.  Knowledge of Federal processes and exposure to Federal Cost Accounting Standards also a plus.

  • This is a full-time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
