Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division have an opening for a Research Assistant in the Northen Metabolomics Group.  This position will support research on a variety of sample types including soil, microbes, fungi, and plants with a key focus on characterizing interspecies interactions through metabolite exchange using mass spectrometry-based analysis techniques. This position will provide assistance on metabolomics projects including operating robotic liquid handling instrumentation, performing sample extraction, running samples on and operating LC-MS instrumentation and sample analysis, as well as standard lab responsibilities.      



What You Will Do:

  • Sample preparation for MS analyses, including extraction and handling a wide range of solvents and sample types (soil, microbes, media, fungi, environmental water, etc)

  • Independently run samples on the LC-MS

  • Regularly utilize and troubleshoot lab instrumentation, including a Thermo QExactive mass spectrometer, MALDI MS, automated liquid handling systems, UHPLC, lyophilizer, SpeedVac, centrifuge, and water bath sonicator

  • Design, setup and process exometabolomics experiments in support of existing lab research projects and methods development goals

  • Prepare metabolite standard solutions for LC-MS method development

  • Perform basic mass spectrometry sample analysis, including metabolite identification and quantification

  • Work with robotic automation equipment

  • Regularly run Python code as part of sample analysis and QC

  • Regularly perform and troubleshoot sample extractions using robotic automation equipment and manual methods following standardized operating procedures

  • Participate in group and team meetings

  • Routinely perform basic lab support duties, including equipment maintenance, purchase of consumables, lab and freezer organization, requisitioning of waste, etc

  • Maintain lab notebook and detailed instrumentation and sample logs

  • Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure the safety of one's self and others in the lab and office spaces



What is Required:

  • Motivated individual with BS in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry, engineering or bioinformatics

  • Extremely detail-oriented with excellent communication, writing and troubleshooting skills

  • Proficiency with basic office software (google docs, excel, etc.)

  • Excellent laboratory skills and experience working in a research lab environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Strong science foundation and ability to apply concepts for troubleshooting experiments and instrumentation



Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience performing automated liquid extraction procedures

  • Experience working in a mass spectrometry lab

  • Experience with sample analysis of small metabolites (ex. amino acids, sugars, organic acids)

  • Familiarity with Thermo QExactive MS, Hamilton Vantage and Agilent 1290 UHPLC instruments

  • Experience running scripts (or writing code) using scientific programming languages (ex. python, MATLAB, R)

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.

  • Work will be primarily performed at DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) — 2800 Mitchell Dr., Walnut Creek, CA.
