Berkeley Lab has an opening for a Safety Coordinator to support the Laboratory Directorate/Operations (LD/Ops) Division. This position will function as a principal resource for the strategic and day-to-day execution of health and safety policies, procedures, and programs in the diverse work environments of Division. The Safety Coordinator will demonstrate a deep commitment to responsive customer service in all interactions with customers and colleagues. You will promote a robust safety culture and support safety-awareness and compliance in all aspects of assigned client groups’ health and safety programs. You will also partner with Environment, Health & Safety, IT, HR and other subject matter experts to bring continuous improvement to safety programs and support technology, in keeping with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) commitment to being a learning organization.


What You Will Do:

  • Partner with line management in the development, communication, and implementation of the LD/Ops Division’s Integrated Safety Management plan. Maintain solid working knowledge and familiarity with staff, facilities, work activities, and potential hazards. Assist in developing communication plans and safety training to ensure all staff are adequately informed and trained to perform their work safely.

  • Partner with line management and work leads to integrate safety into all work activities to promote a safety culture where everyone takes responsibility for the safety of others as well as themselves.

  • Partner with the Ergonomics Team Lead to develop and fulfill an individualized training program in workplace ergonomics, with a focus on office environments. Conduct preventative ergonomic evaluations of employee workstations to identify potential and current ergonomics risks in the office environment. 

  • Plan, coordinate, and support the LD/Ops Division Safety Committee meetings for constructive exchanges on safety issues and best practices. Participate on Laboratory committees.

  • Create, plan, and implement systems, programs and procedures related to workspace inspections, hazard identification and analysis, corrective actions, waste management and waste minimization, and documentation.

  • Manage and coordinate all applicable safety documentation (e.g., Job Hazards Analysis, walk-around inspection reports, ergonomic records), and consult management on responses to audit/review findings and ensure that all corrective actions are tracked, closed out and validated. Analyze complex safety issues and develop recommendations for creative and effective solutions.

  • Support the planning and execution of the LD/Ops Division’s annual Self-Assessment. Proactively participate in setting objectives, training and leading assessment teams, preparation and analysis of reports.


What is Required:

  • B.A. or B.S. preferred, or combination of education and experience equivalent to 3 years of relevant experience.  

  • Strong interest in and commitment to safety culture and related program initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to define, develop, and implement program initiatives, and to independently establish priorities, plan, coordinate, and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with experience in successfully interacting and communicating with both internal and external stakeholders, including mid- to senior-level management, and leading project teams and meetings.

  • Proven ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience writing administrative documents and reports that are concise, logical, and grammatically correct. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain databases to run queries and develop complex reports.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LBNL, Department of Energy (DOE), state and/or federal EHS regulatory policies, procedures and practices.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
