Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. The Scientific Engineering Associate will provide technical expertise and Plan and design of control systems and data acquisition for FLEXLAB’s evolving projects with minimal supervision form the Principal Investigators (PIs).

This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

What You Will Do:

Instrumentation Technical Support

  • Develop HVAC control sequences to meet specific research project requirements.

  • Provide technical expertise to specify and implement the project hardware (sensors, DAQ systems, custom hardware)

  • Provide technical expertise to the project team on the hardware and make necessary calibrations.

  • Provide suggestions to the project team on the fabrication of custom sensor arrays and additional hardware to meet specific project requirements.

  • Work closely with diverse equipment manufacturers to integrate commercial and pre-commercial building systems.

  • Document standard processes and procedures specific to FLEXLAB and BTUS.

FLEXLAB Support/Operations, PI/Special Project Support

  • Plan and design of control systems and data acquisition for FLEXLAB’s evolving projects.

  • Troubleshoot issues with DAQ sensors and systems as they develop and provide suggestions to resolve the issues.

  • Analyze experimental data and contribute to diagnosis of performance issues as relates to HVAC systems, building envelope or other experimental devices (e.g. lighting, plug loads)

  • Provide technical support to the PIs with experimental design and documentation.

  • Install and calibrate permanent and research project-specific sensors.

  • Write scripts and custom spreadsheet applications in support of research projects.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Train PIs, research partners, student interns, and lab affiliates in the use and calibration of FLEXLAB instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

  • Maintain and document calibration procedures for permanently installed sensors.

  • Keep informed on new hardware and software technologies.

  • Experiment with new technologies towards improving business procedures within the Building Technologies Division.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering, physics, or a related field or knowledge equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant program and extensive related professional technical experience.

  • Minimum 4 years of programming of commercial and residential HVAC systems and controls hands-on technical experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to use data acquisition and field measurement systems including both hardware and software.

  • Fundamental understanding of physics and electronics associated with HVAC systems.

  • Instrumentation calibration experience using water bath and NIST traceable standards as relates to building science.

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic working requirements and tasks in diverse fields as required by the research group.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently and productively both independently and in a team setting.

  • Ability to gauge project scope and timeline and work with minimal guidance to meet project deliverables and deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.

  • Ability to supervise and train research associates, lab affiliates, and student interns.

  • Ability to provide leadership and coordination of research staff for laboratory experiments.

  • Experience with data analysis in spreadsheet environments such as Excel.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding of tracer gas analysis instrumentation and procedures.

  • Python programming.

  • National Instruments LabView and TestStand programming environment.

  • STATA computational analysis programming.

  • R data analysis programming environment.

  • Experience with commercial electrical wiring.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
