Discover your future at Berkeley Lab!

Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Student Assistant at the Center for X-ray Optics (CXRO). You'll be able to support desktop systems for staff and scientists in the Center for X-ray Optics and the Advanced Light Source (ALS). Specifically, you'll develop skills on a variety of operating systems (OS) and provide desktop and UNIX workstation support.

What you'll learn:

  • The technical landscape of a world-renowned scientific environment.

  • How the Center for X-ray Optics develops new instrumentation to address national needs and technical challenges that impact materials, life and environmental sciences.

  • About the ALS. This research facility produces light--principally x-rays--with special qualities. Scientists use these x-rays as a tool to do their work, just as dentists use x-rays as a tool.

What you'll get to do:

  • Basic troubleshooting of a variety of OS, software, and hardware.

  • Be the "go-to" for complex user questions about usage matters for all the standard desktop software packages (system utility, security, Web browsing, file sharing, email, network setup and other office productivity software)

  • Assemble, configure and install new workstations and peripherals.

  • Assist system managers to troubleshoot, maintain and manage several Windows and Linux servers including mail, print and Web servers.

  • Occasional Web and Linux scripting in BASH, PHP, PERL, etc.

What you'll need to be successful:

  • Experience providing desktop workstation and server support to Linux and Windows PC users.

  • Solid knowledge of Linux, Windows, OSX, and basic network support.

  • Basic knowledge of software development in PHP.

  • Knowledge of Windows, Linux OS and PC hardware and networking.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on November 1, 2018.

Notes:

  • This is a part-time, 1 year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will primarily be performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
