Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Student Assistant to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will assist with handling soil samples for chemical and microbiological analysis. The student will primarily work with soil samples to determine microbial community composition, extracellular enzyme activities and CO2 production rates under different environmental conditions. Project aims to understand the impact of temperature changes on soil microbes. The student will be using molecular biology methods such as DNA/RNA extraction and purification, microscopy, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative-PCR, and performing gas chromatography (GC) measurements. The student will be expected to contribute day-to-day lab upkeep.

 

What is Required:

  • Experience with molecular methods (such as DNA extraction, quantification and amplification).
  • Experience with soil incubations.
  • Familiarity with reading and understanding different forms of published literature.
  • Experience with Word and Excel.
  • Can work within general business hours.
  • Is able to work 10-20 hours/week.
  • Can handle ad hoc work and changing priorities.
  • Is detailed-oriented, well-organized, reliable and has initiative.
  • Must be enrolled in a full-time, degreed, academic program.

 

Hours:

  • Flexible, 20 hours/week during the school year and up to 36 hours/week during the summer.

Notes:

  • This is a part-time, 1 year student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs
  • Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.

  •  Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
