Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) Scientific Networking Division has an immediate opening for Unix Systems Engineer to join the team.

Are you an exceptional unix systems engineer who likes working on truly innovative projects? Do you tinker with micro electronics and unix kernels in your spare time? Are you passionate about the advancement of science and technology? Do you dream of automating a distributed collection of unix hosts and configuring them to support one of the world's fastest networks designed for science?

If so, consider joining the Infrastructure Group for Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). The services we manage support a network that interconnects the U.S. national laboratory system. ESnet is widely regarded as a technical pioneer, is a dynamic organization of highly-motivated engineers focused on results. Our mission is to accelerate science by delivering unparalleled networking capabilities, tools, and innovations. As an organization, we are small enough to be agile but large enough to offer rewarding challenges on a global scale. ESnet provides innovative networking and collaborative services to national research laboratories and other Department of Energy sites, connecting them to research and education networks worldwide, as well as the greater Internet.

We envision a world in which scientific progress is completely unconstrained by the physical location of instruments, people, computational resources, or data. If you share that vision, ESnet is the right place for you.

What You Will Do:

  • Consult and collaborate with ESnet staff to understand needs and requirements for hosting, identity management and collaboration solutions. Architect, design, implement and support those solutions to meet science networking and computing requirements.

  • Configure, troubleshoot and maintain a broad set of services on CentOS, Debian, and FreeBSD systems. In addition, I demonstrate skills in designing, implementing and supporting automated DevOps and container-based systems and workflows (commercial as well as in-house developed) integrated with ESnet’s Information Architecture.

  • Participate on project teams to successfully complete project scopes, on time and within project budgets.

  • Independently carry out on-call support for infrastructure systems on a rotating basis.

Additionally, the Unix Systems Engineer may:

  • Architect systems infrastructure solutions, and lead architecture development initiatives.

  • Lead project teams, develop and executes project scopes, schedules, and budgets.

What is Required:

  • A minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of eight years of related Unix systems management experience.

  • Experience deploying, configuring, troubleshooting and supporting CentOS, Debian, FreeBSD and occasionally Windows systems running a variety of services.

  • Experience automating approaches for configuring and maintaining (e.g. patching) large collections of systems using Ansible or similar configuration management systems.

  • Familiarity and operational experience working with virtualized environments such as VMware including managing a collection of hypervisors and provisioning virtual machines.

  • Familiarity and operational experience designing, deploying and maintaining DevOps pipelines and container-based solutions using Docker, Kubernetes, and Rancher or their equivalents.

  • Understanding and experience working with identity management systems including LDAP and soft and hard token-based authentication systems.

  • Familiarity and experience in configuring, troubleshooting and using IPv4/IPv6 stacks on unix hosts and in virtual private networks, switches, and routers.

  • Demonstrated high level of collaboration skills with technical peers, vendors, and customers.

  • Familiarity with and experience developing software and proficiency coding in Python and other scripting languages.

  • Project Management experience specifically demonstrated expertise in developing technical project scope, schedule, and budget.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience managing FreeBSD systems.

  • Software development in a UNIX environment, and demonstrated experience supporting software development teams and projects via DevOps environment.

  • Experience as a “Product Manager” for critical unix services.

  • Demonstrated experience for technology lifecycle management (including alignment with budget), upgrade planning, Subject Matter Expert (SME) for design, and any technical vendor/contributor management.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading committees, working groups and task forces to promote and develop standards in support of operations, engineering, and development activities.

  • Experience in establishing and leading initiatives to develop unix system architectures, service and capacity strategies including service level performance targets, and in coordination with budget planning efforts.

  • Demonstrated high level of collaboration skills with technical peers, vendors, and customers.

  • Project Management skills: demonstrated expertise leading project teams to successfully complete and develop project scope, on time and within project budgets.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Preference for work to be performed at Berkeley Lab’s main site, however considerations for remote location will be made on a case-by-case basis.
