Berkeley Lab is hiring an Intake Manager & Investigator (INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY) to support the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD). Reporting to the OPHD Director, this role is responsible for receiving and managing complaints, conducting informal inquiries and formal investigations, and ensuring timely, confidential resolution of concerns related to ADA, Title VI, VII, and IX. The position also oversees select compliance areas and participates in alternative dispute resolutions. It involves extensive collaboration with stakeholders across the Lab, UC system, and external partners.

 

What You Will Do:

Complaint Processing

  • Utilizes trauma-informed techniques to independently manage complaint intake, coordination, tracking, reporting, and analysis of concerns related to the Lab work environment. 

  • Ensures appropriate communication, escalation, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Represents the Lab with external agencies as needed.

 

Investigations

  • Plans and conducts neutral, fact-based investigations of policy violations. 

  • Gathers and analyzes evidence through interviews and document reviews, maintaining confidentiality throughout. 

  • Prepares detailed investigative reports and communicates findings clearly. 

  • May provide testimony in legal or administrative hearings.

 

Data Collection 

  • Collects, maintains, and verifies data for all OPHD reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with external reporting requirements.

 

Research 

  • Stays current on legal and policy developments impacting OPHD. 

  • Conducts legal research and collaborates with legal counsel on changes affecting the Lab’s compliance responsibilities.

  • OPHD Projects Contributes to various compliance-related projects, including civil rights compliance reviews and process improvements, as assigned.

  • Outreach, Coordination & Partner Support Supports OPHD-led employee training, listening sessions, and professional development initiatives.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.

  • 5+ years of complaint intake experience, ideally using trauma-informed methods.

  • Proven ability to plan and conduct fair, thorough workplace investigations.

  • Experience developing internal complaint procedures.

  • Strong skills in evidence gathering and analysis.

  • Proven ability to manage sensitive, confidential information.

  • Extensive experience with data collection, analysis, and compliance tracking.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize independently.

  • Skilled in handling sensitive matters with professionalism, tact, and discretion.

  • Familiarity with UC/Lab policies and relevant state/federal agencies (EEOC, CRD, OFCCP, OCR, DOL).

  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders and advising at all organizational levels.

  • Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively on complex issues.

  • Experience delivering training and presentations to varied audiences.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in civil rights compliance and navigating overlapping requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of disability and accessibility laws, with public sector application.

  • Experience managing or facilitating Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) programs.

  • Certifications from AWI, ATIXA, or other investigation/civil rights programs.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is expected to pay $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 annually. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
