Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division (NSD) has an immediate opening for an Accelerator Operator at at the 88 Inch Cyclotron.  In this role, you will set up and deliver tuned beams to the experimenter’s test area. This position will be expected to function as the Operator-In-Charge to perform standard operational and technical activities and to use established standards and practices to ensure safe operation of the Cyclotron.  This role will apply experience and knowledge to respond to problems encountered during the operation of the Cyclotron and to instigate necessary corrective actions to mitigate problem conditions.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain control of the Cyclotron during complicated activities by demonstrating good judgment and function with the necessary level of independence, responsibility and accountability.

  • Assume responsibility for the Cyclotron operation and demonstrate adherence to standards and practices that assure safe operation of the Cyclotron by following established EH&S and NSD safety and operational procedures.

  • Serve as the “Operator-In-Charge”, with the responsibility to remain in charge of the operation of the Cyclotron and activities associated with the Cyclotron.

  • Respond to alarm conditions and place the Cyclotron in a safe condition by troubleshooting and taking appropriate corrective actions to mitigate alarm conditions.

  • Set up the Cyclotron systems for operation based on predictions, references and experimenter’s needs.

  • Search and secure the vault, the pit, the trench and the caves according to procedures.

  • Startup and operate the ECR, AECR & VENUS ion sources.

  • Tune the Cyclotron based on the experimenter’s needs to deliver high transmission beams from the source, to the inflector, through the Cyclotron to the beam stop and on to the target area in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Monitor the machine’s performance for degradation trends and maintain a log of the machine’s conditions.

  • Shutdown the Cyclotron systems to a safe condition and conduct routine radiation surveys.

  • Assist the staff of the 88-Inch Cyclotron making repairs or upgrades to the Cyclotron and its systems during maintenance or shutdown periods.

  • Participate in the training of other operators and provide training as necessary for affiliates.

  • Perform collateral duties as necessary when required by the operations supervisor.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May develop guidelines, operator tools or operational aides that will facilitate and/or improve the effectiveness of the operators.

  • Participate in beam development of new beams, document new beams or analyze machine parameters.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering, college or technical coursework in the scientific, engineering or technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems to a system level and initiate corrective action during high stress situations.

  • Knowledge of mechanical skills sufficient to perform tasks related to operation and maintenance of accelerators.

  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments by exercising independent judgment under only general guidance and limited supervision.

  • Ability to interact professionally with scientific and engineering staff.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in technical, research or industry that demonstrates abilities to work on complex systems (especially with emphasis on radiation, high-voltage, vacuum, process cooling, safety interlocks).

  • Knowledge of accelerator operation.

  • Computer programming and database experience.

  • Navigate a keyboard accurately.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
