Berkeley Lab’s  Advanced Light Source Division has an opening for an ALS Electronics Installation & Fabrication/Technician. Under general supervision, you will perform complex technical support in the field of electronics fabrication and installation in an accelerator environment. You will perform measurements and calculations necessary to achieve desired results.  You will Install large, integrated, control, instrumentation and communication systems. You will develop complex prototype models for use in production scale manufacturing.

 

Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

ALS Electronics Installation/Fabrication Technician (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation cross-connect / inter-connect cabling systems.

  • Operate hand, power and machine tools of the trade.

  • Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams.

  • Follow generalized written or verbal instructions. Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade.

  • Interact with engineers, designers and electronics coordinators on matters relating to finished product design, technical performance and documentation criteria. Provide input to cost estimates and production/installation scheduling.


In addition to the above, ALS Electronics Installation/Fabrication Technician (Level 3) Specific Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate complex and highly specialized electronics apparatus that require advanced technical knowledge and expertise in manufacturing methods, tooling and equipment usage, circuit analysis, non-standard packaging and enclosures, and component and material selection.

  • Install large control, instrumentation and communication systems, which require thorough understanding and application of system integration principles.

  • In collaboration with engineers, designers, and electronics coordinators, design and develop complex printed prototype models for production which emphasize ease/cost of manufacturing, access for maintenance and calibration, and cost/technical performance optimization.

  • Design and fabricate specialized electronics packaging and enclosures, which require advanced expertise in metallic and non-metallic material forming techniques.

  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) on any installation and fabrication tasks that are released from the Electronics Installation shop.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed for the ALS Electronics Installation/Fabrication Technician (Level 2 & 3):

  • Provide on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff on matters relating to design layout, fabrication and installation techniques and procedures, and quality and workmanship codes and standards.

  • Provide on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff; lead small groups focused on specific tasks or assignments.

  • Operate computer-aided drafting equipment.

 

ALS Electronics Installation/Fabrication Technician (Level 2) Required Qualifications:

  • Substantial technical understanding of electronics fabrication and installation techniques, procedures, codes and quality standards.

  • Substantial work experience in fabricating and installing the full spectrum of general electronics hardware and systems.

  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments under only general guidance and limited supervision.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use appropriate hand power and machine tools of the trade.

  • Ability to perform design layouts requiring general measurements and calculations.

  • Ability to read and correctly interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams.

  • Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).

 

In addition to the above, ALS Electronics Installation & Fabrication Technician (Level 3) Required Qualifications:

  • Substantial advanced technical understanding of electronics fabrication and installation techniques, procedures, codes and quality standards.

  • Substantial work experience in fabricating complex, specialized electronics apparatus and installing large integrated systems.

  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments independently with supervision limited to instructions regarding job scope and time/cost guidelines.

  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use appropriate hand, power and machine tools of the trade.

  • Ability to perform design layouts requiring complex arithmetic calculations including trigonometry.

  • Ability to generate assembly sequence instructions, drawings, parts and material lists, component layout diagrams and other specialized fabrication documentation associated with prototype development.

  • Color vision sufficient to discern writing and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23kg (50 lbs.).

 

Additional Desired Qualifications for the ALS Electronics Installation & Fabrication Technician (Level 2 & 3):

  • High school/ trade school courses in tool usage, soldering, blueprint/schematic reading, and general AC and DC circuit theory.

  • General electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.

  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets database and word processors.

  • General and computer aided electronics drafting and design documentation skills.

  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, and word processors.

Notes:

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
