Berkeley Lab has an opening for a Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Physical Sciences (PS) Area. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the ALD has Lab-wide responsibility for providing leadership, stewardship, and strategic vision for the Area. With a $125M budget, the Area has a diverse and exciting program in experiment, theory, computing, and instrumentation, which is well-matched to national priorities. These priorities guide our current activities and inform our long-term strategy as we seek to answer questions about the nature of our universe. Current efforts include work on the high luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, building a unique gamma-ray spectrometer to be installed the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University, and developing new compact laser plasma accelerators that could transform accelerator-based science of all types. The Area also provides the engineering expertise needed for Berkeley Lab’s experiments, such as the Advanced Light Source Upgrade, and many others throughout the Department of Energy’s (DOE) network of National Labs. The Physical Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab is situated in close proximity to the Lab’s five national user facilities: National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, Energy Sciences Network, the Molecular Foundry, and the Advanced Light Source.

The ALD oversees and collaborates with Directors of Nuclear Science, Physics, Engineering, and Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics divisions to ensure the success of both the Area and the Laboratory’s goals. In particular, the ALD will develop and drive the strategy to enhance synergy among the Area’s divisions, and support integrated teams between areas at Berkeley Lab. The ALD is responsible for strategic planning, responsible management of people and facilities, research quality and integrity, and communication about Physical Sciences Area research. They will be encouraged to develop or maintain an active research portfolio. In addition, they will act as a liaison to external agencies and other national laboratories, promote partnerships with academia and industry, and guide the development of externally sponsored basic research projects and programs consistent with the Laboratory’s overall vision and strategy. With the other ALDs, they actively participate in institutional research and management initiatives, develop cross-area research proposals, and actively shepherd these efforts through their life cycle. The ALD is also a key member of the Laboratory’s senior leadership team providing advice, counsel, and insight to the Laboratory Director and Deputy Lab Directors on the formulation and execution of the Laboratory’s strategic priorities and initiatives.

What You Will Do:

  • In close collaboration with Area Division and Facility leaders, develop strategic plan and long- term research vision for the Area along with a plan to execute the vision, including growing the capabilities of the scientific infrastructure and identifying funding sources, as well as the recruitment and development of an outstanding and diverse workforce.

  • Develops joint portfolio of multidisciplinary proposals addressing the strategic priorities of the Physical Sciences Area and its four divisions at Berkeley Lab.

  • In collaborations with Division Directors periodically reviews organizational structure and programs to ensure they support the short and long-term strategic objectives.

  • Identifies critical research collaborations with other Berkeley Lab scientific disciplines, fellow national laboratories, academic institutions and private sector entities.

  • Proactively promotes science education and works to build pipeline of next generation researchers through outreach and education programs with other national laboratories and learning institutions.

  • Actively ensures that PSA programs and research correspond with the Area’s strategic plan and the Laboratory’s overall mission.

  • Integrates scientific programs across PSA and is responsible for science DOE Performance Evaluation and Measurement Plan outcomes.

  • Designs, articulates and develops PSA long-term and short-term scientific/technical project and program goals.

  • Manages division directors responsible for programmatic activities within the respective division.

  • Acts as chief spokesperson for the PSA to the University, DOE, external agencies and internal groups.

  • Leads and builds consensus with other ALDs to develop Laboratory-wide research initiatives, as well as policies and guidelines.

  • In collaboration with the division directors, develops short- and long-term financial strategies to ensure proper funding levels and evaluates new funding sources and oversees the preparation and development of annual PSA budget.

  • Ensures stewardship of and adherence to appropriate financial, procurement, budget, property, and accounting policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Ensures programmatic and project operations are cost effective, efficient and optimized within constraints of the PSA budget.

  • Oversees the recruitment and retention of national and international talent utilizing a open and fair recruitment criteria, and applying diversity, equity and inclusion principles for an appropriately diverse applicant pool and employee workforce.

  • With division directors, ensures proper management of HR responsibilities (e.g., salary administration, staffing, performance management, diversity, employee development, etc.)

  • Responsible for key decisions regarding senior staff, including compensation, evaluation and organizational structure.

  • Develops talent in senior scientific and management positions through assessments, mentoring, development plans and succession planning strategy.

  • Expected to develop and maintain a personal research portfolio.

  • Effectively communicates relevant information to key stakeholders both internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Develop and maintain strong professional connections with senior DOE officials, including, but not limited to, the leaders of the Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, and relevant DOE Technology Offices.

  • In partnership with the Lab’s Strategic Communications team, ensures that Area communications strategies are aligned with the institution’s strategies.Holds regular meetings (e.g. monthly) with direct reports and ensures the effective collaborations and integration of area programs.

What is Required:

  • Advanced degree relevant to fundamental Physical Sciences research and an internationally recognized record of research accomplishments in that field and/or equivalent education/experience.

  • Recognized as a respected expert and leader in respective scientific or engineering field. As applicable, well regarded by peers at national laboratories, within the DOE complex, in the UC system, and/or other relevant national and international organizations.

  • Must be published as appropriate and/or recognized by awards and honors.

  • Proven effective communicator with the ability to effectively and skillfully communicate with individuals as well as small to large audiences.

  • Must have a proven track record as a visionary yet practical leader with the ability to envision better ways to accomplish objectives, lead implementation of ideas, create opportunities, and mitigate constraints affecting success.

  • Experience leading and managing a multi-disciplined operational, scientific and/or engineering research program. Track record of collaborative decision making while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks.

  • Experience in developing a strategic plan, making high-level strategic decisions and representing a multi-disciplined operational or scientific program to both internal and external management.

  • Must be a proven manager with extensive understanding of the issues and challenges of running a large organization, including effective people, project, budget and asset management, i.e., administrative oversight, creativity in decision making and problem solving, experience in human resource management, and a commitment to mentoring and career development.

  • Substantial knowledge of specific regulatory requirements (DOE, UC, National Labs, Office of Science).
