U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI), a DOE Office of Science User Facility located at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), has an opening for a Bioinformatics Data Scientist to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will leverage computational biology and comparative genomics to advance plant genome biology. You will work on comparative analysis of plant genomes within and between species for the purpose of creating and analyzing pan-genomes to understand mechanisms of genome evolution and contribution of genetic change to bioenergy and other relevant traits. You will also work on problems of a diverse scope; demonstrates good judgment and recommends solutions for user support for internal and external collaborators at every stage of genomics projects to ensure clear and timely communications, data distribution and analysis. You will report to the Plant Comparative Genomics group lead and work as part of the JGI pan-genome working group and ongoing collaborations with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) computational research division.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and test algorithms for pan-genome creation and analysis, taking into account phylogenetic and population genetic considerations.
  • Work independently with broad supervision on computational problems of diverse scope, and demonstrate good judgment in identifying solutions.
  • Lead and perform complex data analyses; perform and troubleshoot comparative genome analyses using standard publicly available tools and pipelines.
  • Develop and apply new approaches and computational tools for custom pan-genome analysis, in collaboration with JGI and external computational biologists and JGI user communities.
  • Design, validate, and optimize pan-genome analysis including testing of new protocols and scripts.
  • Collaborate with the Phytozome and exabiome projects to harness capabilities for data visualization and distribution and efficient use of high-performance computing.
  • Contribute to scientific reports, publications, and presentations describing algorithms, tools, and comparative genome analyses.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in biological data analysis with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences, Bioinformatics or related field; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.
  • Solid background in plant biology, genomics, and bioinformatics.
  • Expertise with existing algorithms and tools for inter- and intra-species comparative genome analysis.
  • Experience with programming (Python, Perl, etc.), databases (SQL), and genomics data analyses in the Unix environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to independently make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advanced bioinformatics methods and tools for genome analysis, and comparative genomics.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to effectively work with large user communities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to address user needs in an effective and timely manner.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment.
  • Extensive experience with bioinformatics analyses of large-scale genomics data.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 8 or more years of experience in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Life Sciences or a closely related discipline with a Bachelor’s degree or a Ph.D.
  • Experience in developing new comparative genomics tools and/or application to diverse plant genomes.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
