Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Biologist Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be involved in the characterization of roots from Arabidopsis engineered lines expressing traits related to cell wall recalcitrance. This project aims at identifying the most promising bioengineering approaches to promote soil carbon sequestration. Fabricated model laboratory ecosystems (EcoFABs) will be used to examine root phenotypes and measure their effect on a rhizosphere microbial community. Engineered Arabidopsis plant will also be grown hydroponically to collect root material for cell wall chemical analyses and in-vitro biodegradability assays. The work will be conducted under the supervision of Aymerick Eudes in collaboration with scientists from the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI).

What You Will Do:

  • Arabidopsis transformation and genotyping.
  • Plant cultivation in EcoFABs and hydroponic system.
  • Inoculation experiments in EcoFABs with a synthetic microbial community / DNA extraction.
  • Root chemical composition analyses (lignin, monosaccharides, aromatics).
  • Biodegradation assays of root material using a microbial consortium.
  • Root phenotyping using microscopy and semi-automated image analysis.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Archive generated material (plasmid/seeds/biomass samples). Ensure that others could duplicate results.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Metabolomics, Biochemistry, or related area.
  • Experience with Arabidopsis (or another model system) including culturing, transformation, selection, and genotyping.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and self-motivated.
  • Work with the guidance of a Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with characterizing microbial communities (inoculation and sequencing).
  • Experience in molecular biology (cloning).
  • Experience in cell wall composition analyses.
  • Experience in biomass deconstruction and cultivation of microbial consortia.
  • Experience with root phenotyping and microscopy.
  • Knowledge with analyzing sequencing data from microbial communities.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • Anticipated hire date will be in October of 2021.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Berkeley Lab is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) and strives to hire individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who share these same values and commitments.
  • Work will be primarily performed at KBase, 5858 Horton St. Suite 525, Emeryville, CA.
