Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science, and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Building Automation Systems Engineer will be responsible for supporting the installation and modification of building automation & energy management control infrastructure.

 

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support controls system upgrades and installation of new building controls infrastructure.

  • Evaluate new installations for compliance with specifications and design guides.

  • Review contractor submittals for compliance with project design documents.

  • Collaborate with the project team for field changes, respond to RFIs, coordinate with facilities craft for in-house work that affects projects such as changes or demolition to existing controls.

  • Review reports from commissioning agent, TAB and contractor to ensure results are in compliance with project requirements.

  • Coordinate and support transitions of newly completed projects, arrange training of facilities technicians by the contractors.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve building controls system communication and application issues in support of projects.

  • Coordinating with operations staff for supporting the ongoing operations of critical facilities during the construction process.

  • Attend vendor product training as required.

  • Research, recommend and implement new systems to enhance existing systems functionality and reliability.

  • Make recommendations to change standards and methods to improve processes and results.

  • Assist in the development of a Change Management process.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A 4-year degree from an accredited institution, in a related IT discipline (e.g. systems management, systems integration, networking, or similar) or engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, or similar) and/or 2-5 years of equivalent experience/training.

  • Experience with TCP/IP network configuration and firewall management.

  • Basic understanding of one or more of the following communications protocols: BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP/IP, and LonWorks.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changes in priorities efficiently.

  • In addition to being team-oriented, the candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and have a familiarity with drawing tools such as MS Visio and AutoCAD.

  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation process control equipment and systems, with a focus on HVAC systems.

  • Must have a good understanding of networking fundamentals.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal, and people management skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changes in priorities efficiently.

  • In addition to being team-oriented, the candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and have a working proficiency with drawing tools such as MS Visio and AutoCAD.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable in one or more of the following communications protocols: BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP/IP, and LonWorks.

  • Experience with DDC Controls: Automated Logic, and/or Johnson Controls.

  • Knowledge of commercial building HVAC processes and systems.

  • Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and control systems drawings.

  • Ability to produce or willingness to learn how to produce engineering and control system drawings.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
