Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar. You will work with scientific staff to conduct research into energy-efficient window and window shading systems, specifically with a focus on measurement and modelling of optical systems. With the guidance from the principal scientist, the incumbent will participate in scientific projects and will determine and develop approach to solutions. You will also participate in efforts to operate and maintain optical measurement facilities, such as, but not limited to UV/Vis/NIR spectrophotometer, FT-IR, and pgII goniophotometer.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct Research efforts to develop a methodology to measure and model light scattering window components.

  • Develop parametric Radiance models of window systems light redirecting blinds and louvres, fritted glass, and diffuse interlayers.

  • Assist in the development of mathematical models describing light-scattering façade elements.

  • Work on database design and maintenance of fenestration products and components of fenestration products.

  • Write and assist with writing publications.

  • Follow ETA and Lab safety requirements and complete assigned trainings in timely manner.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Assist in the development of algorithms used by LBNL software tools(e.g. Berkeley Labs WINDOWS, THERM, and EnergyPlus).

  • Operate measurement equipment to collect experimental data to support theoretical work.

What Is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Physics or other field related to optics and radiometry.

  • Demonstrated analytical expertise and experience in the field of optical scattering.

  • Experience with raytracing, preferably Radiance, for modelling of light-scattering systems.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a research team.

  • Great communication skills both verbal and writing.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Programming experience, Python, C/C++, MATLAB.

  • Prior Experience with database design and maintenance.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe.
