Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division (FAC) is looking for a Building Safety and Code Compliance Manager to join their Engineering Team!

 

In this newly designed role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and administering a full range of programs related to campus and building safety. This includes but is not limited to working closely with the Designated Campus Fire Marshal and providing plan review services, issuance of permits, inspections, and assurance of code compliance.  Additionally, you will be responsible for personnel management and oversee the programs and staffing necessary for the safe installation of electrical equipment and field inspection services. As the Certified Building Official (CBO) you will serve as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and will manage systems and procedures to protect Laboratory assets in accordance with Federal & State regulations and Laboratory policies and standards.

 

We are looking for an experienced self-starter with a strong technical background in building code compliance and program/project management who can launch this new role at the Lab.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide positive leadership and development in all functional areas necessary for effective implementation of the compliance program.
  • Perform the responsibilities and duties of "Building Official" as defined in the California Building Code.
  • Serve as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in accordance with the Department of Energy (DOE) orders and Lab policies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all construction projects comply with the applicable provisions of the International Building Code (IBC) and the California Building Standards Code (Title 24), including the administration of the functional building department, interpretation of code requirements, and direction of the code process.
  • Partner closely and build cooperative relationships within the Laboratory’s Operations Divisions to ensure compliance while maintaining alignment with the Laboratory’s mission to make significant investments to repair, maintain, and upgrade existing infrastructure and buildings.

 

What Is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) and a minimum of 10 years of recent relevant work experience managing technical plan reviews, permitting, and construction inspection for a California local or state entity responsible for fire or building code regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge, technical expertise, and thorough understanding of Federal and State codes/regulations.
  • Possession of an ICC Certified Building Official Certificate. If certification is in progress or not current at time of employment, obtaining the certification within 1 year of appointment and maintaining the certification in good standing is a condition of employment.
  • ICC Certification for Building Plans Examiner.
  • Demonstrated experience creating, developing, and implementing projects/programs, anticipating needs and planning for projected needs, and the ability to develop/formalize programmatic procedures/policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, train, supervise, and lead a high functioning technical staff.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to interface with all levels of personnel both internal and external to an organization with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), Career appointment.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
