Berkeley Lab is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science, and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Chief of Projects & Construction will lead the Capital Projects Portfolio Program (more than $500m in projects) comprising of new science buildings and infrastructure/facility modernization projects. These projects will support world-class science funded through the Department of Energy/Office of Science (DOE/SC).  

 

The successful candidate is a proven leader that is results-driven, makes critical decisions using data and sound judgement, is fiscally responsible, and serves in the best interest of the Lab community and sponsors.

 

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Providing comprehensive strategic vision, oversight, and leadership of the Laboratory’s construction management and execution

  • Improving and maintaining key processes, procedures, tools, metrics, and systems for project delivery

  • Leading and managing a team of approximately 35 staff, and providing guidance and counsel for effectively executing capital projects ($2M to $130M) and small projects (as many as 80 projects per year ranging in cost from $100K to $2M) that will optimally support the Lab’s scientific programs and requirements

  • Hiring and supervising staff at various levels, and developing, coaching, and managing for high performance

  • Promoting values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as safety and security  

  • Transparent, relevant, and current communication with staff, Laboratory colleagues, and senior management

  • Proactively building and sustaining partnerships within the Lab, University of California, Department of Energy, and the community

  • Creating strong partnerships within project teams and stakeholders.

  • Balancing competing demands and priorities in planning, managing, and executing the Lab’s broad portfolio of projects

  • Directing and conversing technically with architects, engineers, environmental specialist, scientist,  vendors and contractors.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, project management, business management, or related discipline, and/or equivalent experience

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive management experience for the total execution of large construction projects, and general management experience

  • Experience in project financial management, contract management, contractor/subcontractor oversight and management, schedule management and/or capital planning


Additional Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Advanced degree in related field

  • PE or Architectural license preferred

  • PMP certified

  • This is a full time, career appointment.
