Berkeley Lab is seeking a Computer Systems Engineer  to devise performance enhancements to libraries that support the Global Address Space programming in a production environment design test procedures to assess performance and implement modifications that affect those changes, and implement low level communication network library support for heterogeneous systems that include GPUs.


The Computer Systems Engineer will:


  • Analyze the communication performance and inter-node scalability characteristics of the UPC++ and GASNet-EX libraries on supercomputers built from thousands of GPUs or manycore processors.

  • Develop new optimizations and algorithms to mitigate on-node or inter-node data movement bottlenecks in these libraries to enable faster on-node and off node communication performance.

  • Participate in a multidisciplinary team involving computer scientists, mathematicians, and domain scientists with the purpose of developing and deploying these libraries  for the solution of scientific and engineering problems.


  • Document work and results in the form of technical reports, journal papers and conference proceedings.

  • Publish work and results at scientific meetings.


MInimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computational science, or a related field with a minimum 5 years related experience; or Master’s degree with a minimum of 3 years related experience, or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience implementing high quality software.

  • Experience in performance analysis and performance optimization of distributed and threaded applications.

  • High-performance parallel programming with C++.

  • Parallel programming in MPI, CUDA or a PGAS model

  • Performance analysis and performance optimization of distributed and threaded applications.

  • Proven consensus builder in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • This is a full time career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
