Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology (EGSB) Division has an opening for a Coastal Research Scientific Community Engagement Manager to join the team.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is funding several pilot programs: the Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales (COMPASS) and Integrated Coastal Modeling (ICoM), with the goal of enhancing the predictive understanding of coastal systems and their evolution, including their response to short- and long-term changes. The 2-year COMPASS pilot is composed of a Field, Measurements, and Experiments (FME) team, and a Great Lakes Modeling (GLM) team that will work together to establish a vision for a decade-long effort to address questions around multiscale mechanisms that impact coastal systems, including natural and anthropogenic events. The ICoM pilot is focused on the mid-Atlantic region, examining a range of natural and human-induced changes. 

In this exciting role, you will work closely with COMPASS and ICoM leadership teams to ensure the broader coastal research community is represented and respected throughout the pilot project. You will organize and lead events, such as a webinar series and several workshops aimed at engaging the community in both programs throughout the 2-year pilot; write and edit internal and online communications related to those events; and create program-specific event playbooks. Under general supervision, you will report to the DOE Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) User Engagement Lead (collaborating program), but will actively collaborate with the multi-institutional COMPASS and ICoM teams, both led by the Pacific Northwest National Lab. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as the point-of-contact for COMPASS and ICoM-sponsored community engagement events, including development, management, and reporting of program events, and be accountable for communication and coordination with a wide variety of audiences throughout the implementation of each program.
  • Engage intellectually with the scientific community, and identify opportunities for collaboration by establishing relationships with COMPASS/ICoM collaborators and broader research communities, including key stakeholders and members of underrepresented communities.
  • Work with the leadership teams to set engagement strategies, define tasks and deliverables based on directions from COMPASS/ICoM leadership, and track progress related to community workshops, webinars, and working groups.
  • Capture and quantify metrics for community engagement events. Track and report on events to the leadership teams for reporting to DOE.
  • Ensure that both programs maintain a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in their programming and events.
  • Support COMPASS and ICoM community engagement activities with a comprehensive external and internal communications strategy, in coordination with affiliated DOE National Labs and other collaborative organizations.
  • Write internal and external communications regarding events, including announcements, updates, and reminders for upcoming events, and reports on recently completed events.
  • Recruit speakers, advertise events and support the production of community webinars to highlight new researchers, and collaboration or training opportunities.
  • Create, update, and maintain the playbook, including documenting policies and procedures.
  • Arrange photography and video support at workshops and other events, as needed.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2-5 years experience in program planning and facilitation or equivalent combination.
  • Possesses an in-depth understanding of the challenges in working with coastal data, and is familiar with current research, current tools and resources, leading researchers, and organizations.
  • Experience writing, proofing, and editing science communication materials, web content, and other related documents.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing a variety of media sources to effectively communicate with different audiences including print media, newsletters, virtual meeting platforms, and websites.
  • Some knowledge of scientific theories and concepts related to coastal research science, from an observational, mechanistic, and/or modeling perspective.
  • Has a strong interest in a breadth of scientific disciplines and the ability to synthesize information and ideas across science domains.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a variety of scientific, administrative and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, think critically, apply analytical skills, problem solve, and exercise sound judgment in support of the larger team and organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and think strategically about program implementation, manage projects and budgets, set feasible goals and objectives, and effectively balance multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Google Suite, Adobe Suite, and WordPress.
  • Some experience with virtual meeting platforms.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in a related field.

  • This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
