Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Computational Biologist Research Scientist to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will develop proof-of-principle research projects that integrate microbial sequence-based data with the US Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) functionality, ranging from analysis tools and data architectures to other data types such as metabolomics and synthetic biology.

You will work closely with KBase leads in Advanced Systems Science and Current Systems Science to determine new research areas with potentially high impact on the KBase Roadmap and KBase Users. You will use in-depth knowledge of genome biology to provide input on data type design and data analysis. You will implement state-of-the-art computational workflows for the analysis of diverse genomic datasets and will provide an expert technical and biological interpretation of the results. You will communicate with KBase staff and external scientists at all stages of analyses and facilitate the transfer of data and tools. You will effectively work across groups in a multi-site, multi-team setting. You will also support KBase Help Desk, and work with KBase Users to advance their science through data analysis, co-authored publications, and joint grant proposals.

What You Will Do:

  • In alignment with the KBase roadmap, use expert knowledge of genome biology and bioinformatics to provide an interpretation of genomic and metagenomic datasets and present findings to the internal and external scientific staff at various forums.
  • Contribute to the development of approaches to study genomes, metagenomes, microbiomes, and systems biology that support goals and timelines established by KBase management.
  • Use scientific and technical expertise to develop new computational approaches to extract and analyze highly complex microbiome datasets that align with community targets for the KBase engagement efforts.
  • Serve as expert KBase scientist in meetings with external users; provide scientific advice to resolve complex issues arising during KBase project execution and analysis; communicate KBase science capabilities.
  • Contribute to presentations and publications and train other team members.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed codebase following open-source software best practices.
  • Collaborate with other National lab scientists on proof-of-concept science studies to test and demonstrate the utility of new functional capabilities to the KBase user community.
  • May develop independent proof-of-principle science projects to advance KBase science capabilities.
  • May train and direct the work of technical support staff or students.

What is Required:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience beyond the highest degree in genome biology, informatics, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in genomic analysis and interpretation; significant research accomplishments, including a strong publication record.
  • Demonstrated success in leading design and implementation of significant systems and software in a scientific, bioinformatic or technical environment with a focus on emerging/new technologies and platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot highly complex technical problems; recommend and implement actions.
  • Experience managing complex projects including advanced analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
  • Experience establishing effective collaborations and interacting with members of scientific and informatics communities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal science communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, team building, and networking skills.
  • Ability to conduct presentations for groups of scientists.
  • Customer service skills and willingness to assist product users.
  • Knowledge of scientific theories and concepts related to genomics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioenergy, carbon cycling and biogeochemistry, industrial biotechnology, and bio-based chemicals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a part of a diverse team.
  • Ability to apply analytical skills, problem solve and exercise sound judgment in support of the larger team and organization.
  • Strong proficiency in UNIX environment, command of python, and use of bioinformatics analysis and data visualization tools; significant experience in using integrated databases, and web-based development tools; experience using parallel computing environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Google Suite.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in genome biology, informatics, or a related field with postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience in leading a team of technical employees.
  • Course work in advanced data analysis and database management.

For full consideration, please apply by March 22, 2021.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
