Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has an opening for a Computational Postdoctoral Scholar.  The Computer Architecture Group is interested in the design, architecture and programming of future HPC systems to enable continued scientific research.  A timely question for our group is how to continue performance scaling in the face of reduced technology node scaling, commonly referred to as Moore’s Law.  In order to enable continued performance scaling of computing hardware we are investigating all options from specialized hardware accelerators, micro-architectural enhancements, new devices to replace existing CMOS transistors, emerging memories, 3D, and photonics.

This position requires you to participate in a larger effort in developing and applying an innovative new modeling and simulation flow that quantifies the impact of new device technologies and manufacturing techniques for computation and memory will have on application performance. The incumbent will also participate in micro-architectural research towards improving performance of critical HPC applications. You will have demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of modeling and simulation of micro-architecture, and a solid understanding of semiconductor devices, architecture specialization, memories, and 3D integration. You will also establish strong collaborations to use this simulation flow as part of research projects in adjacent fields by collaboration with other experts.


What You Will Do:

  • Design and implement a multi-scale modeling and simulation environment to model the impact of a wide range of emerging device technologies on HPC applications and system design.

  • Work closely with the developers of compact device models for incorporation into the simulation framework, including developers of other relevant technologies. Provide feedback and suggestions to those developers on how to improve their device’s performance at the architectural level.

  • Provide expertise in developing long-term strategies for modeling and simulation efforts.

  • Provide expertise in setting research direction and priorities for future computing architectures.

  • Collaborate with algorithm and software developers for the purpose of making this framework easily accessible to them.

  • Apply the completed modeling and simulation flow as part of research and development efforts targeting new computational architectures for all aspects of scientific computing. Implement models for these computational architectures as needed.

  • Participate in all requested assignments, including research, preparation of funding proposals, documentation of results and reporting results to sponsors.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Establish research directions and pursue funding opportunities.


What is Required:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.

  • Understanding of devices and their models, 3D integration, emerging memory technologies, and architecture specialization (e.g., accelerators).

  • Demonstrated expertise in working with modeling and simulation methods and software tools for hardware exploration.

  • Demonstrated expertise in Verilog, C++, Python.

  • Familiarity with HPC and scientific computing applications.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in Scala.

  • Understanding of programming models popular in HPC.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
