Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Applied Math and Computational Sciences Division has an opening for a Project Research Scientist to join the team.

The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) in Berkeley Lab’s Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division (AMCRD) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in DOE mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. The primary focus of CCSE researchers is on designing algorithms for multiscale, multiphysics problems described by nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, and in developing implementations of algorithms that target current and next-generation massively parallel computational architectures. CCSE researchers work collaboratively with application scientists to develop and deploy state-of-the-art solution methodologies in these fields.

CCSE has an immediate opening for a project scientist to lead the development of new applications based on AMReX, focusing in particular on scientific areas without AMReX-based codes currently in use.  The person in this position will identify new opportunities in areas of interest to the Department of Energy Office of Science, will develop and test new AMReX-based simulation capability to advance science, and will work to develop new collaborations with domain scientists in these areas

What You Will Do:

  • Identify areas of interest to the DOE Office of Science in which new AMReX-based simulation capability could have significant scientific impact.
  • Develop and implement new simulation methodology built on the AMReX code framework.
  • Develop and deploy unit and regression tests and tutorials for any new code functionality.
  • Contribute to the online documentation of any new AMReX-based applications.
  • Work closely with the AMReX team to ensure compatibility of new applications and AMReX software strategies.
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the AMReX and AMReX-based code teams.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering or a related field or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  • Significant hands-on experience with software design, development, implementation and debugging in C++ and/or CUDA-based codes.
  • Experience with numerical modeling of scientific phenomena.
  • Significant programming experience with C++ for scientific applications.
  • Significant experience with algorithm design for hybrid CPU/GPU systems.
  • Familiarity with git for software version control.
  • Experience with regression testing/continuous integration frameworks.
  • Experience with visualization tools for large-scale numerical simulation results.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present findings.
  • Ability to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 2 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
