The Scalable Solvers Group in the Computational Research Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has a Computational Science Postdoctoral Scholar opening in the area of temporal integration methods of partial differential equations. You will participate in research activities related to computational mathematics for solving large-scale PDEs that arise in areas such as combustion, weather prediction, and other  problems relevant to DOE and LBNL missions.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop efficient temporal methods for solving multi-scale and multi-physics PDE models.

  • Develop parallel in time numerical algorithms for accelerating temporal integration of PDEs and PDE constrained optimization problems.

  • Develop and evaluate high performance software tools for modern supercomputers.

What is Required:

  • A PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Science or Engineering within the last 3 years.

  • Ability to program proficiently in a high-level programming language, such as C++/C/FORTRAN, knowledge of Python, and  experience in parallel computing using MPI and OpenMP.

  • Experience developing higher-order temporal methods for partial differential equations.

  • Knowledge of performance optimization for scientific codes.

  • Knowledge and experience with machine learning techniques and/or optimization is a plus.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
