Berkeley Lab’s Energy Storage & Distributed Resources (ESDR) Division has an opening for a Computational Scientific Postdoctoral Fellow!

In this role, you will analyze a wide variety of PV-related data to understand PV module degradation so next-generation modules can attain a new level of cost optimization.  You will build open-source tools to extract information on degradation from power-production data, and provide valuable insights pertaining to why certain solar modules fail while others can last for decades.  Additionally, you will publish these findings in journal articles and conferences.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules are an integral part of the worldwide transition to a low-carbon electrical system. Their dominance comes in part due to relentless improvements in cost and durability. This position will collaborate with the DuraMAT coalition which aims to discover, develop, de-risk, and enable the commercialization of new materials and designs for PV modules—with the potential for a levelized cost of electricity of less than 3 cents per kilowatt-hour.

What You Will Do:

  • Building and deploying open source software tools for the PV community in python.

  • Developing and applying data mining and statistical learning methods to multiple data types to extract trends.

  • Developing and maintaining online dashboards for interactively exploring PV.

  • Data writing and publishing papers.

What is Required:

  • A recent Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related field.

  • High aptitude and desire for programming and building software infrastructure.

  • Experience with object-oriented programming, databases (MongoDB preferred), software engineering practice (version control, unit testing, continuous integration), and Python.

  • Experience with data mining and data analysis.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that facilitate interdisciplinary work across multiple institutions.

What We Desire:

  • Experience in web development (HTML/CSS/JQuery, frameworks e.g. Flask).

  • Prior work in the field of solar photovoltaics.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on October 31, 2019.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.  You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
