Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is adding a new Computer Systems Engineer to the Security Group. ESnet is a remote friendly organization that builds and operates a cutting edge network for the U.S. National Laboratory system used by staff, instruments, and collaborators worldwide. The Security Group works closely with other staff, scientists and organizations to make sure that the network is a trusted component for research and discovery.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Integrate knowledge of network protocols, software security, threats, vulnerabilities, mitigation strategies, and other information to build a security environment that appropriately balances risk to support ESnet’s open science mission.
  • Serve as a core member of ESnet’s Security Group performing varying security duties such as: proactive log inspection, development/management of security software and services, or resolution of security incidents.
  • Develop project plans, gather broad stakeholder input, define needs, find solutions, and communicate progress regularly.
  • Promote a strong security culture through technical security consulting with other ESnet staff.

 

What is Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • A growth oriented mindset and an intrinsic desire to grow and advance relevant skills.
  • An understanding of core principles of TCP/IP networks and some experience analyzing packet traces.
  • Experience in gathering project requirements, developing technical project scope, finding solutions, and reporting progress and challenges.
  • Competency with Linux, including scripting.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, capable of communicating via multiple mediums and to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated history of working collaboratively to find flexible solutions.
  • Programming or software development experience.
  • Workflow automation.
  • B.A/B.S. degree in a relevant field.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
