Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is hiring for a Construction Safety Specialist in the Environment, Health & Safety Division to provide industrial hygiene and technical safety support for a variety of construction and maintenance projects. Areas include industrial hygiene, construction health and safety, subcontractor health and safety, maintenance health and safety, silica, excavations safety, fall protection, ladder safety, and drinking water quality. This is a great opportunity to apply your professional and subject matter knowledge to ensure the Laboratory mission and operations meet applicable health and safety requirements and work is performed safely across the Lab.


What You Will Do:


Berkeley Lab Division Support:

  • Act as a technical consultant to customer divisions to develop solutions and standards relative to new processes, technologies and safety policies/initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain a working relationship with customers, including scientists, building managers, engineers, subcontractors, maintenance and facilities personnel in both individual and group settings.

  • Support Facilities Project Management on health and safety issues primarily during construction phases of projects, and during the design and planning stages as needed.


Environment, Health & Safety Division Support:

  • Complete job-related tasks from general direction with verification from the Construction and Maintenance Field Support Manager.

  • Provide timely activity / project status reports with regards to customer issues, performance measures, performance indicators, core technical programs and other deliverables.

  • Stay abreast of current Berkeley Lab and EHS Program Health and Safety Policies.

  • Prepare compliance program documents, appraisal reports, accident reports, training course materials, funding requests, and statistics that are technically accurate and complete.


Technical Program Support:

  • Serve as the technical field construction health and safety professional providing occupational health and safety support and oversight for construction and maintenance projects.

  • Manage the Subcontractor Job Hazard Analysis Program related training and presentations as needed. Develop and administer Program Self Assessment, including updating and maintaining program policies.

  • Conduct hazard evaluations and assessments and provide recommendations to prevent exposure to safety hazards. 

  • Serve as Water Quality Program Manager, provide and assess drinking water quality program support needs and risks as they relate to the Lab’s construction projects and Facilities Division maintenance and repair work.

  • Support other program areas within the Construction and Maintenance Field Support Team as needed. Programs may include asbestos lead sampling and subcontractor oversight, noise monitoring, fall protection, mold remediation / water intrusion mitigation support, indoor air quality support, chemical exposure monitoring, fire and life safety inspections, mercury spill response and cleanup, and lab decommissioning support.


What is Required:

  • BA/BS and 5 to 7 years of relevant, advanced construction safety and industrial hygiene experience; M.S. and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience; Ph.D. and 1 to 3 of significant and relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with Facilities and EHS Division management and staff, project managers, superintendents, and subcontractors. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA, Department of Energy, ANSI, and other related safety requirements/regulations.

  • Proficiency with standard business software, including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.

  • Certified Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification.

  • Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) certifications strongly preferred.

  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist desired, or commitment to obtain certification within 1 year if certification not held.

  • Ability to wear air-purifying, negative pressure respiratory protection.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Frequent standing and walking; moving in confined spaces; climbing stairs; inspecting equipment requiring reaching with hands and arms and use of hands to handle or feel; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • This is a full-time, 1-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
