Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) is seeking a highly skilled Cyber Security Systems Administrator to join our dynamic team. As a key member of the team, you will play a crucial role in the ALS Beamline Security Upgrade project, an exciting multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing the computing infrastructure and cyber security of our beamline networks. With over 40 scientific beamlines in operation, this project presents a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the security landscape of our cutting-edge research facility.



The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract nearly 1,700 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. This position can be hired at the Level 2 or Level 3 Systems Administrator.



What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate with research scientists to document the existing state of beamline networks.

  • In coordination with systems administrators, network administrators, and cyber security staff, assist with developing a plan to strengthen the security of beamline networks.

  • Implement hardware and software changes to enhance the security of beamline networks.

  • Assist with the deployment of tools for monitoring and managing beamline cyber security.

  • Create training materials and conduct one-on-one and small group training sessions to help research scientists adapt to the new security model.

  • Establish a system for regularly backing up critical data and configuration information from beamline computers.

  • Participate in weekly project status meetings, providing updates and insights to the project team.

 

The Level 3 responsibilities also Include:

  • In coordination with systems administrators, network administrators, and cyber security staff, develop a plan to strengthen the security of beamline networks.

  • Deploy advanced tools for monitoring and managing beamline cyber security.

  • Determine and implement cyber security procedures specific to the unique needs of the ALS beamline networks, taking into account the sensitive nature of scientific research data.

  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors to stay up-to-date with the latest cyber security trends, technologies, and threats, and ensure that the ALS beamline networks are at the forefront of security measures.

  • Provide recommendations for cyber security issues and initiatives relevant to the ALS beamline networks.

  • Manage technical projects related to ALS beamline cyber security initiatives.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience, with a minimum of 5 years experience in a professional IT environment.

  • Hands-on experience or formal training in network security and/or cyber security best practices (e.g., operating system hardening, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, antivirus).

  • Strong knowledge of cyber security concepts, tools, methods, and threats.

  • Proficiency in PC workstation and server hardware, networking, and security devices.

  • Strong command of PC operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and macOS.

  • Experience in managing and troubleshooting Ethernet networks, with familiarity in basic network switching and routing concepts, as well as TCP/IP and related protocols and services.

  • Working knowledge of remote access software and protocols (e.g., VPN, SSH, VNC, RDP).

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely through well-crafted documentation.

  • Strong commitment to promoting and demonstrating effective cyber security practices.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.



The Level 3 position qualifications also include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience, with a minimum of 8 years experience in a professional IT environment.

  • Proven experience leading and managing cyber security initiatives in complex IT environments, preferably in research or academic settings.

  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with industry-standard cyber security frameworks, tools, and methodologies.

  • Experience managing complex technical projects.



Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a scientific research or academic setting.

  • Relevant certifications such as CISA, CISM, Security+, or similar.

  • Advanced certifications in cyber security, such as CISSP, SSCP, CASP+, or similar.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

  • For Level 2, this position is expected to pay $8,658.00 - $10,822.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $8,658.00 - $14,610.00/month for the Systems Administrator (Level 2)

  • For Level 3, this position is expected to pay $10,307.00 - $12,884.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $10,307.00 - $17,393.00/month for the Staff Systems Administrator (Level 3). 

  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
