Berkeley Lab’s Data Science and Technology Department (DST), has an opening for a Data Science and Technology Software Engineer who will join the team on a wide array of research and development projects. This is a great opportunity to be a part of addressing the next generation of science research problems. High quality user interfaces and tools are now critical to all areas of scientific investigation.


The Data Science and Technology Department (DST) develops software and tools to enable scientists to address complex and large-scale computing and data analysis problems beyond what is possible today. DST engages in partnerships with scientists to understand their computing and data analysis challenges to develop leading-edge solutions that fit the needs of the scientists. Current research areas and projects include workflow tools, user-level abstractions for exascale data discovery, development of new techniques to secure high-performance computing and networking environments, computationally-driven discovery of new materials, and processing pipelines for scientific data. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.


What You Will Do:

  • Design and develop, as part of diverse teams including domain scientists, software solutions to enable scientific research.

  • Deploy, install, configure, integrate, and test software solutions.

  • Collect, manipulate, and analyze data related to scientific computing systems.

  • Provide input to domain science and/or computer science research papers suitable for submission to peer-reviewed venues.

  • Coordinate and/or lead the development and science teams on requirements and features.

  • Coordinate and/or lead the software development process for the team.

  • Present to audiences within and outside the lab.


In addition to the above, the CSE IV also will:

  • Be a key contributor to grants for new projects and/or renewals.

  • Formulate the technical vision for their projects.

  • Determine when and how to apply new technologies for their projects.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; or 6 years and a Master’s degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Proficiency programming in Python and at least one of: C/C++, Java, or JavaScript.

  • Demonstrated experience with the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.

  • Experience applying modern software technologies for databases, computational workflows, data processing pipelines, and/or scientific reproducibility.

  • Demonstrated experience as the lead of a development team.

Requirements for CSE IV Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related experience; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to envision new types of solutions to new or existing scientific data challenges.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and grow  new science engagements.

  • This is a full-time, 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
