U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI), a DOE Office of Science User Facility located at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab has an opening for a Data Systems Engineer in the Data Science and Informatics Department.

In this exciting role, you will work at the JGI Division to support the laboratory information management (LIMS) and data management infrastructure. You will collaborate with users, software developers, and laboratory scientists to develop automation and tooling that makes the data systems a joy to use. You will be part of the JGI team that will help shape the data systems that support the production, management, and use of petabytes of environmental genomics data. JGI is committed to making all of our data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR), in order to amplify our impact on and support of the scientific community.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Design and develop new systems in partnership with software engineers and scientists to enable quick and easy consumption of JGI data. 
  • Collaborate with the Institutional Informatics and Systems Engineering groups to design, implement and operate reliable data systems for the JGI.
  • Create documentation (user-facing and internal).
  • Collaborate with the Systems Infrastructure and Systems Engineering teams to develop and maintain software to automate processes and reduce the need for manual intervention.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve complex data systems issues through collaboration with diverse teams across the DOE JGI.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with team members in the Data Science and Informatics group as well as Genomic Technologies and the Science Programs.
  • Present solutions to audiences within and outside Berkeley Lab.

 

What is Required:

  • A minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one programming language e(eg Python/Ruby/Perl, GoLang, C, Rust, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience with database design and development (eg Postgres, Oracle, MongoDB).
  • Experience building data pipelines, backend microservice development, and REST APIs.
  • Experience with supporting different facets of the data lifecycle (generation, QA/QC, processing, analysis, archive, reuse).
  • Experience with modern software development practices, APIs and “DevOps” technologies.
  • A strong desire to explore and evaluate promising solutions to the problems at hand.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong customer focus and systems focused approach to problem solving.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with wet lab Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) technologies or next-generation sequencing data.

  • This is a full time appointment, 2 year appointment, with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs
