Berkeley Lab’s Environment, Health, & Safety Division (EHS) has an opening for a Deputy Biosafety  Officer to join their Health & Safety Team!  


In this role, you will provide expert support to internal staff in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling biosafety, chemical, and physical hazards.  Reporting to EHS Division H&S Research Support Management, you will provide biosafety and related occupational safety and health expertise that helps the Lab provide a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.  


What Will You Do:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for all matters related to biosafety, including supporting the Biosafety Officer and overall institutional Biosafety Program implementation.

  • Support the Berkeley Lab Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), including reviewing research protocols.

  • Conduct risk assessments of biological materials and assist researchers in developing work authorizations for biological research activities such as cell lines/tissues, recombinant materials and techniques, biological agents, and toxins.

  • Support emerging biological research trends for field studies that are not conducted in laboratory settings.

  • Evaluate laboratory facilities for containment levels and safe operating procedures.

  • Conduct on-site evaluations of research processes and provide consultation to researchers on their potential(s) for exposure to biological, chemical, and physical agents.

  • In coordination with the Ventilation Program SME, evaluate and document biosafety cabinets to ensure that they are certified, maintained, and properly utilized by research and operations personnel. 

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for matters relating to bloodborne pathogens and as overall institutional “owner” of bloodborne pathogens safety at LBNL.

  • Provide technical direction and consultation on implementation of Biosafety Program-specific elements.

  • Partner with Health Services in identifying employees who should be included in medical surveillance programs.

  • Oversee technical assurance for Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens Programs.

  • Serve as the SME and point of contact for food sanitation, including participating in periodic cafeteria inspections performed by a registered sanitarian.

  • Consult on technical issues in the areas of biosafety, industrial hygiene, and occupational safety, and assist in hazard identification, hazard evaluation, and the development of controls appropriate to the work being performed.

  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams that conduct work activity reviews, safety inspections, self-assessments, accident investigations, and special projects.

  • Develop and implement exposure assessment plans.

  • Provide essential support services during localized or sitewide emergencies, including those that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the Lab, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect Lab properties.


What is Required: 

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) field and a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in participating on interdisciplinary ES&H teams and in developing and presenting technical reports and briefings.  

  • Broad knowledge of and proven ability to apply biosafety and ES&H principles, theories, and concepts to provide creative solutions to complex problems and develop mechanisms for measuring results.

  • Ability to develop, implement, maintain, and monitor biosafety programs and general ES&H programs and initiatives, including development and execution of training, writing procedures, and conducting inspections and exposure assessments in laboratory and technical areas.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of NIH, OSHA, DOE, ANSI and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulations, standards, and guidelines.

  • Proficiency with standard business software, including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface with internal and external stakeholders with professionalism, sensitivity, and diplomacy.

  • Ability to physically inspect all Lab work areas, including shops, construction sites, laboratories, office areas, outside areas, etc.

  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of this position including field activity involving: minor lifting (up to 25 pounds); frequent standing and walking; moving in confined spaces; climbing stairs; inspecting equipment requiring reaching with hands and arms and use of hands to handle or feel; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.


What We Desire:

  • Advanced graduate degree in an area closely associated with Biosafety.

  • Experience working in a biomedical research laboratory.

  • Solid knowledge base in recombinant DNA techniques, genetics, cell biology, etc.

  • Experience with import/export programs (e.g., USDA, CDC).

  • Experience working in a DOE environment.

  • Professional certification, registration, or equivalent.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), Career appointment.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • Salary Range: $115,000 - $140,000 annually.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
