The Earth & Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) within Berkeley Lab has created an exciting new role to help advance its digital communications portfolio. The Digital Communication Strategist will serve as a member of the EESA strategic initiatives and communications team and will be responsible for managing EESA’s digital assets and online presence, including websites, social media, and other digital media and visual communications. Reporting to EESA’s Chief Strategy Officer, the incumbent will work closely with the CSO and the Area Communications Lead to design and grow a portfolio of communications products that touch a broad set of scientific initiatives within EESA.

 

EESA comprises two Berkeley Lab divisions, the Climate & Ecosystem Sciences and Energy Geosciences divisions, which conduct forefront research on the most pressing energy and environmental challenges of our time, including climate change, future water supply, alternative energy, and other topics outlined in the EESA 2025 Strategic Vision. The Digital Communication Strategist role will span EESA’s internal and external stakeholders and have the opportunity to work with senior researchers and operations staff to apply design, creative, and digital skills to advance Berkeley Lab’s mission of ‘Bringing science solutions to the world.


What You Will Do:

  • Bring creative energy and insights to harness emerging digital tools and platforms to advance the EESA’s communications and brand.

  • Manage social media and marketing channels (e.g., LinkedIn, Instagram, email newsletters) and understand how they should be used and optimized for growth (e.g., cadence, sequence, and timing of content).

  • Support EESA’s primary website and bring thought-leadership to testing and incorporating new designs and content.

  • Conduct research that improves existing written and visual content for various channels, projects, and communication campaigns.

  • Evaluate how audiences view content, what experience they go through, and what digital approaches are most effective.

  • Design digital and print creative assets, including creation of project websites, special publications, fact sheets, infographics, or other communications products. 

  • Help drive understanding, amplification, and communication of a consistent and compelling brand story (voice and tone, visual expression, messaging, etc).

  • Support development of stories and content around major initiative launches and communication campaigns. 

  • Curate digital collections of photos, illustrations, and other visual collateral.

  • Lead publication and printing of assets (digital and offline) across products and audiences.

  • Assist with translating scientific research into strategic messages and campaigns.

  • Use knowledge of SEO and website analytics to maximize digital outreach.

  • Assist with special projects and assignments, as needed.

What is Required: 

  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a related role and Bachelor’s degree in communication, design, scientific or related field preferred.

  • Submission of a professional portfolio or other work samples is required

  • Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and synthesize information by drawing on a variety of qualitative and quantitative sources.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and editing skills, and strong sense of color theory, typography, and visual layout concepts.

  • Willing to take on multiple roles and responsibilities as part of a tight-knit, proactive team and environment with a ‘I can figure this out’ entrepreneurial mentality.

  • Embraces user-centric design thinking to developing content and communication products.

  • Proficiency with one or more design programs (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Sketch, Canva, etc) and web development platforms (e.g., WordPress, HTML, Javascript) and constantly thinking about how to expand skills. 

  • An understanding of digital communication channels, content, and best practices. 

  • Ability to translate technical subject matter into simply understood messages and stories.

  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders from different experiences and backgrounds and solicit feedback for creative projects or content.

  • Passion for impactful storytelling and interest in scientific topics that advance energy and environmental sustainability and protecting the planet’s resources.  


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with CRM software is a plus. 

  • Experience with photography and video production is a plus.

  • This is a full-time, career appointment.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
