Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for an Earth Pore-Scale Modeling Postdoc with expertise in numerical modeling of pore-scale flow, chemical reaction, continuous and discontinuous mechanical processes, and their couplings in Earth Sciences to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work with PIs Mengsu Hu and Carl Steefel, to develop and apply novel pore-scale numerical tool sets to analyze fundamental Earth processes of formation and evolution of sedimentary rocks, including potentially carbonate compaction, fracture healing, and clay swelling. You should have expertise in pore-scale modeling and analyzing fundamental Earth processes quantitatively.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct numerical modeling of pore-scale hydro-chemo-mechanical (HCM) processes, including carbonate compaction, fracture healing, and clay swelling.
  • Collaborate with scientists in the fields of geochemistry, geophysics, and Earth sciences for fundamental geosciences.
  • Write peer-review journal articles and technical reports.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Explore fundamental processes associated with geologic hydrogen storage.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in hydrogeology, geochemistry, rock mechanics, reactive transport, fracture mechanics, or equivalent discipline.
  • Expertise in numerical modeling and code development.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a multidisciplinary group of scientists.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and for writing peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Programming skills: C/C++, and/or C#, FORTRAN.
  • Experience of working on or with laboratory experiments on Earth materials.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1.5 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal up to 3 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
