Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division is looking for an Electrician to join their Site Utilities and Maintenance Team!

 

In this exciting role, you will install, test, operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, maintain and service the Lab’s electrical equipment. This includes initiating and coordinating repairs by other crafts as needed to maintain equipment viability comprising the Lab’s electrical distribution systems and building utility support systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for installing and modifying the building office and research work areas. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Troubleshoot and repair complex control systems, such as building energy management systems and variable frequency drives.
  • Install, connect, test, operate, modify, repair and replace circuit breakers, controls, fuses, lighting fixtures, motors, outlets, signaling devices, switches, thermostats, timers and other wiring devices. Test, operate, calibrate, adjust, clean, service and repair electrical components and systems. Update prints and equipment history/service records.
  • Fabricate component parts, assemblies and chassis; place and terminate various types of busses, cables, conductors and wires. Shape, join, place and anchor various types of cableways, raceways, enclosures and wire ways.
  • Interpret prints, wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Use knowledge of the National Electric Code and LBL master specifications for compliant installations and NFPA 70E for safe work practices.
  • May be required to work extended workday/week assignments and be available to respond to emergency callbacks including to support planned/emergency work on weekends/holidays.
  • Comply with LBL implementation of DOE health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental-protection policies.
  • Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.

 

What is Required:

  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in industrial electrical maintenance or installation, equivalent training program in the electrical field and a minimum of 4 years journey-level industrial maintenance/installation experience, including maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of electrical distribution, switchgear and protective devices in an operating chemical, power, processing, industrial service, manufacturing plant or equivalent military plant environment.
  • State Certified Electrician or ability to become a CA Certified Electrician within 12 months of hire.
  • Experience in field installation/shop maintenance of electrical equipment including troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of motors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems.
  • Experience using portable tools, benders/cutters/threaders/anchor/fastener tools, fixed drills, saws, grinders, and sanders.
  • Knowledge of raceway sizes, conductor/current sizes and raceway fill allowances and the ability to set up and pull wire by hand and shape, lace and terminate a wide range of sizes of conductors.
  • Knowledge of proper termination requirements for a wide variety of electrical outlets, switches, motors, transformers, controls and lighting devices.  Must be able to sketch interconnecting wiring and schematic diagrams to document fabrications and installations.
  • Experience using metering devices such as continuity testers, voltage indicators, ammeters and multimeters to measure resistance, amperage, voltage.
  • Experience with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable codes regarding electrical construction techniques, maintenance, and repair of building facilities equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, NETA-MTS, UL and other standards for electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including effective customer service skills
  • Experience using computers for record keeping and communication including the ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a diverse team environment and clearly communicate over telephone and two way radio.  
  • Must have a valid California Driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights, in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights, use manual dexterity in both hands; lift 50 lbs. to chest height, wear protective clothing, and safety equipment.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies during off hours including weekends and holidays. 

 

What We Prefer:

  • NFPA CESW Certification. 
  • Experience maintaining and installing building automation systems, boilers, boiler controls and lighting controls.
  • Experience with research equipment, energy management control systems, and serving as a Service Technician for Energy Management or Lighting Control Systems in LEED buildings.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. 
  • The salary for this position is $51.47 hourly and is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes with predetermined salary rates.
