The Berkeley Lab is seeking an Electronics Engineer to join the team. In the Accelerator Technologies Group, this position will design and implement advanced electronic instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators and other scientific applications, focusing on FPGA-based digital signal processing for real-time control. Responsibilities span the full system lifecycle, from concept to commissioning, with assignments aligned to optimize team performance.

What You Will Do:

  • Analyze complex problems, applying sound judgment to select effective methods and techniques. Collaborate with internal and external experts in relevant fields.
  • Develop advanced electronic instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators with minimal supervision.
  • Design, test, and validate FPGA-based systems, including high-speed serial links and RF electronics. Develop and maintain firmware, programming, and testing infrastructure.
  • Support system design through modeling, firmware development, and lab testing.
  • Document work, present at conferences and workshops, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate across institutions to define requirements and deliver engineering solutions.
  • Lead or contribute to inter-institutional projects involving digital electronics for superconducting RF accelerators (e.g., LCLS-II, PIP-II, AWA).
  • Contribute to proposal development, including technical concepts, budgets, and schedules.
  • Comply with all EH&S policies and maintain required training.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Apply project management to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Lead or contribute to research advancing accelerator instrumentation.
  • Operate effectively in complex user facility environments.

What is Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s, 3 years with a Master’s, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of electronic instrumentation, data acquisition, and digital signal processing.
  • Practical experience with communication systems, software-defined radio, and real-time control.
  • Proficient in hardware testing, debugging, and use of lab equipment.
  • Skilled in HDL simulation, timing closure, and resource optimization.
  • Proficient in C/C++, Python, or Matlab/Octave.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced professional with expertise in RTL design (Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL), IP integration, simulation, timing closure, and hardware deployment.
  • Proficient in C/C++, Python, or Matlab/Octave, with proven software development skills.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed serial links and FPGA transceiver configuration.
  • Familiar with version control and CI tools (e.g., Git, GitHub/GitLab).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., Master’s, or Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or related field, with 3–5+ years of R&D experience.
  • Proven ability to enhance complex user facilities with minimal disruption.
  • Knowledge of Control Theory and UNIX environments.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The expected salary for this position is $132,000.00 - $162,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $117,660.00 - $161,772.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Starting May 7, a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
