Berkeley Lab’s Material Sciences Division has an opening for a EUV/X-RAY Scattering and Spectroscopy Scientist.  

What You Will Do:

Play a key role in support and advancement of EUV and soft-x-ray scatterometry and metrology research and development activities at the Center for X-ray Optics (CXRO). The position encompasses supporting a variety of areas including current programs in scatterometry, reflectometry, as applied to EUV masks and EUV photoresist materials. The position will also include reporting responsibilities (written and oral) both internally and to external sponsors (primarily industry sponsors). The position also requires publication of the obtained results in topic-relevant journals and proceedings and presentations at international conferences.
  • Support R&D in the advancement of EUV and soft-x-ray scatterometry, reflectometry and spectroscopy, techniques, and instruments at the Center for X-ray Optics and the ALS.
  • Scientific support for existing industry programs at CXRO including EUV mask and resist scatterometry, reflectometry, and spectroscopy.
  • Provide analysis and proof of concept support in the development of new proposals related to scatterometry and spectroscopy in the EUV and x-ray regimes.
  • Scatterometry and spectroscopy instrument development.
  • Experimental validation of techniques in the EUV/soft-x-ray regime at synchrotron facilities or with stand-alone sources.
  • Report generation (written and oral) both internally and to external sponsors (primarily industry sponsors).
  • Maintain a strong publication and presentation record
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Mentor undergrad and grad students and Post Docs
  • Support external users
What is Required:
  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field, plus at least 4 years relevant post graduate work experience, or equivalent total work experience
  • Deep knowledge of scattering theory
  • Demonstrated experimental expertise and practical experience in the areas of scatterometry and spectroscopy in the EUV and or x-ray regimes
  • Demonstrated expertise with synchrotron instrumentation and science
  • Demonstrated experience working on industry-funded applied research programs
  • Publication record in journals and proceedings relevant to the field of EUV and/or x-ray scatterometry
  • Strong presentation skills both written and oral
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in EUV microscopy
  • Experience in operation of vacuum systems
  • Experience in interfacing with engineering and technical support staff 
  • Experience in proposal development

  • This is a (full time) one year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
