Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for a Facilities Area Manager (FAM). 

 

In this role, you will participate in programmatic objective/goal setting, plan development and performance assessment and reviews of all facility systems.  You will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of buildings in a mission-ready state and works closely with building management, tenants and customers.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Assure that day-to-day work, operations, and activities are conducted safely and within established work authorizations of the Department of Energy (DOE) regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Lead and collaborate to analyze current and upcoming mission-alignment of facilities and infrastructure. 

  • Assess risks and preventative maintenance programs.

  • Lead and collaborate with building management staff, line management and senior management of research and operational divisions including Facilities, IT, Protective Services and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to provide creative and effective resolutions to a diverse range of complex technical problems.

  • Ensure that safety rules, procedures, practices and requirements are maintained throughout the facility and that building specific procedures are current.

  • Advise the annual Facilities Condition Assessment, Requirement Identification, Deferred Maintenance, and Preventative/Corrective Maintenance programs.


What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Facilities Engineering or related technical discipline and a minimum of 5 years of experience in building, zone/area, and/or facilities and infrastructure management with a large multi-client, multi-building and/or complex facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with disaster planning, emergency preparedness and general facility safety including federal, state and application laws, regulations, procedures and guidelines.

  • Experience with computer applications such as MS Office Suite, Google Applications, and Facilities Management Systems with the ability to do analysis, produce presentations and reports suitable for Facilities and Laboratory management.

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate (verbally and written) with individuals and groups at all levels of an organization.

  • Ability to create high-level reports, presentations and analyses for a range of internal and external senior managers and leadership.

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, prioritizing, organizing and applying time management skills to manage multiple projects at once.

  • Knowledge of best business practices, industry and regulatory standards (federal, state, and local).

  • Must reside within a one-hour commute of assigned facilities due to On-Call considerations.


What We Desire:

  • Certifications in the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), Building Owners and Management Institute (BOMI), or equivalent related certification.

  • PMP/Project Management or equivalent related certification.

  • Advanced graduate degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Facilities Engineering or a related technical discipline.

  • Facility Professional Management Qualification and demonstrated understanding of Department of Energy Orders, National Laboratory work controls, safety and environmental, and project management processes.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to frequently climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders (six plus feet as needed) and must be able to walk to and from job sites.

  • Safely work around machinery, scientific/mechanical equipment, electrical areas and under fluorescent lights, confined spaces.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl, overhead work, heights, confined spaces.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Heat and/or Cold stress, UV (sun) exposure.

  • Working areas may contain hazardous waste, radiation, or other materials.

  • Heavy equipment exposure, Motor vehicle use.
